I smile and say 'Hi' or wave to everyone I meet on the trails or streets.

It's almost always returned with the same.

I was just commenting today how interesting it is that if you smile at someone who is scowling at you because you're on a bike in their proximity, they will often smile back, (unless they're just an angry chump).

Pretty much, stop and get off the bike if I see a rider on a horse

sooner or later...someone is going to take offence at being called 'cum catcher'

I hope it happens sooner.

I gave it five minutes.

Two observations:

He's an *** hole and NYC is a **** hole.

It does nicely illustrate the impetus for my lack of interest in ever going to NYC

Bicyclists in NYC are 99.9% ass hats. Not to mention the jerk offs on electric scooter and mini bikes.

The chances they take are nuts, weaving in and out and trying to squeeze thru traffic.

I have seen two people get severely injured while trying to turn right inside a truck and the curb, the appear out of no where from behind the truck then magically appear in the turn. Stoopid

No bueno. But it's the motorists fault. So, I sent the dashcam footage to the drivers to make their case.

He does travel at a pretty good pace too but in my experience he's not that unusual for a big city denizen.

I'm going to frame this in the eyes of ZeroEnigma..

so for everyone here who once had to commute to work

So you drive to work and every day other people routinely stand in the middle of the street

or delivery trucks and taxis parking in your lane

or people driving against the direction of traffic

pedestrians crossing your path without looking ie jaywalking

or other vehicles not signaling lane changes or turns

I'm sympathetic to this guy. The only traffic laws I see him breaking are going thru red lights after he makes sure the path is clear and safe. For the most part he has the right of way.

herr_oberst 05-25-2023 08:40 PM

I commuted on my bike for years and years and years and years and years. I'm retired now, but even now I can hardly remember a day I haven't been on a bike either for transportation or recreation. (And I don't dawdle. I'm usually in a hurry and trying to make time)
I've seen every single one of the bad behaviors in the first video and countless others.
I've ridden with people like this guy, all aggro and belligerent, hair trigger temper, fists and fingers flying. I hate it.

To me, this guy is doing it wrong. I know he thinks he has to assert himself to be safe; I choose to put my head on a swivel, and then use the agility of the bicycle to remove myself from conflict, rather than meeting conflict head on and then magnifying the exchange with verbal abuse.

Maybe this is how it has to be done in NYC; I wouldn't know. But this behavior is a train wreck to me.

New Yorkers are our version of Parisians. They think they're so much better than the rest of the country. The New York metro area has a tad over 5000 people/sq mile. I'd like to visit someday but I need to study it.

You have to understand the delivery bike culture. It's different for sure, but he's no different.

(edit) The fixie revolution took big in NY and some say the NY bikers are more or less responsible for the popularity outside the track racing community. They may be hybrid bikes with one brake but I wouldn't count on it. When not working some of these cats alley race. They are outlaws. Well, that's obvious, but the point is this is not one guy.

at 1:48 he passes a cop blocking the bike path and tells him "good job"

cop gets butt hurt and follows, ZE purposefully blows thru a red light and the cop tries to pull him over where ZE sucessfully evades and posts the encounter on youtube

kids, don't do this at home
