So, You find a hand grenade....

So, you find a hand grenade. What do you do:

A. Put it down and call the police.
B. Play hot potato.
C. Pull the pin and see what happens.

Apparently, a father and two sons decided to pull the pin and see what happens. It did not end well for the father.

Oh, good grief. Sad, but I feel like if it wasn't the grenade, it was going to be something.

The stupid meter is pegged in that story . You just have to shake your head and move on . Severe penalty paid for being stupid . Hopefully the boys recover .

Inside the house...

Not that I would, but if I did pull the pin. It would be with a VERY long string, outside, behind something grenade-proof.

But I would call the bomb squad.

That pin wasn't going to pull itself.

I mean I gotta assume 5 sec before the incident they were like "what are the chances this thing is actually live?".

In a vacuum, Id personally think very low. Though I sure as hell wouldn't pull the pin to find out.

Found in grandfather's belongings. A pineapple grenade, antique.

Thing is when you pull the pin the spoon still has to release to start the primer. So in addition to pulling the pin, no one had a grip on the spoon.

Leave that stuff where it sits and call the PD. Especially if you have no idea how to handle it.

Movies make grenades sound not very loud in the way movies make gun suppressors sound nearly silent.

Grenades are no joke and you can certainly feel them and lose some hearing. Forget about losing your life. These guys probably thought they'd re-enact the scene from Stripes

"Always clear and confirm the status of a firearm" "Never assume a grenade it's a dud or dummy"

You can't clear a hand grenade so if the father had any sort of "training" he would have known to simply leave it alone & call the police.

This is really sad. Tragedies like this are so easily avoided.

If one is to pull a pin on a grenade.... I would bet they wouldn't have made it far in life in other aspects...

Devils advocate.

Older boom balls didn't have built in safeties like the current ones(twist).

From an earlier post: "Leave that stuff where it sits and call the PD. Especially if you have no idea how to handle it."

I was a freaking Navy helicopter pilot: what I know about grenades could dance on the head of a pin

They barely trusted me with my 9m Hi-power during a conflict!

Handgrenades

I have "pulled the pin" on several frag grenades, but it was at the end of a training session at Camp LeJeune. The biggest problem I had was throwing the thing far enough to keep the training DI from crawling up my a$$! Not the loudest weapon I trained on, but certainly loud enough to affect your hearing.

How do you not throw it?

You pull the pin and throw the thing, just like in the movies

I remember the first time throwing a live grenade. You have 4-8 seconds after pulling the pin and releasing the spoon/handle to get rid of it. I thought I would hear a "BOOM" and a cloud of dust.

But I heard a "BOOM" and felt like I was punched in the chest! I carried an M203 grenade launcher under the barrel of my M-16, at least those were centrifugally armed.
