What new name would you adopt?

I meet a lot of people from China and other places where their given name doesn't work very well in the US. So they pick out a new name to be used here.

What name would you use if you were in the same situation? Pretend you don't already have your "normal" American name. I'm boring; I'd go with John.

Me too. I'd choose a Chinese name so I would sound more American.

In my 20s I always made reservations under Christopher Davenport.

My alter-ego / reservation name is Lester Hipnoodle.

I stole this from a favorite author (Stuart Kaminsky) and it always gets a laugh.

My dad has a highschool classmate who immigrated to America. Way back, immigrants (in general) wanted to assimilate and would often pick an "American" name somewhat similar to their native one. Of course, as an immigrant sometimes you miss the subtleties of cultural conventions. So Uncle Ty picked "Tyrone". He's got to be the only Chinese "Tyrone" out there.

Gunter, or cruise.
A guy who drove the lunch truck to my shop when I first opened was a drifter/surfer kind of guy .
I asked him his name one day and he just replied " cruise" I asked him if that was his first or last name, and he said in a Jeff Spicoli kind of way " it's just cruise, mon"
It was the subject of our jokes for years to come

That made me think... Lots of employees at work came from China and did the renaming thing... You get you usual Joes, Johns etc... But at times I think some folks just messed with them when choosing a name... I've got some Moses Chung, Abraham Ping, Boethius Lee, and I forget some that made me raise an eyebrow... There's a joker at the renaming office.

Seahawk 06-02-2023 07:21 AM

People from India do as well.

I hired an intern this summer. His parents, Pam and Paul, are from two successful families in New Delhi.

Their son, DJ, was surprised that I insisted we all call him by his real name, Damanjit.

Great young man.

When I was in IT some years ago, I set up an admin desktop / user: Bangin Wang...........I ***** you not. She later changed her first name to Cynthia if I recall

Oh, and before I forget, there's a guy who works in our division, last name: Chikitipornsak........

Now follow that y'all...
