Lost My Best Friend Today
Cayman, my lucky Black Cat of 17 years had to be put down today. I knew that it was would be soon, as I noticed the Saturday before last that he was having trouble eating and our vet got us in. All the routine blood work, ect. They weren't able to get a urine sample so I had to drop him off Monday morning for that.
Then a follow-up on Wednesday . Well, the results were very bad, he was in stage 4 kidney failure and had am inoperable mass under his tongue that would bleed. The vet said that because of his kidney failure that was not a candidate for chemo and would be best to let him go. Well, out of all the cats that have owned me, since I was a young puppy, he had demonstrated a unbelievable amount of intelligence, as I have said here before. I told her that I would bring him home and he would tell me when he was ready. So they sent some more medicine and instructions home with me, and Cayman followed his regular routine such as pulling the covers off my face and tapping my face when he was ready for breakfast , tapping the blanket when he wanted under. I mashed up his hard food that he liked, bought more, soft food, baby food, ect. Well, I could tell that he was slowing down yesterday, so I put his carrier in the floor. Now, it has always been a battle to get him into his carrier, but yesterday he walked in and sad down. He told me that it was time, but the vet was already closed, so he came out and climbed my shoulder, then in my lap and up under the covers . When I got up this morning, he walked to the door and sat down facing me. Then he walked into his carrier. At that point, I knew that he was ready and called the vet. Well they were really booked today and the vet would not be there until 10, the same time I had a doctor's appointment across town And there had Me scheduled for blood work and more to make sure that I am still functioning properly . The vet asked if I could do 2:30 , and I told her that around lunch would be better so she set it up for 11:15. Well, when I left my appointment I call to tell them that I would be a few minutes late and she asked if I would be there before 12 as the vet was scheduled for surgery. So I got home, Cayman finished saying his goodbyes and walked into his carrier. He was very quiet as well drove to the vet( typically he had to be put in the carrier and would yell the entire way) So when we got there, he was still quiet (again, normally screaming) and we had to wait a few minutes, and he wanted out of the carrier, since we were the only one in there, I let him out, he sat on my lap, then he wanted down to explore and look out the glass door, so I let him. . ![]() ![]() Well, we went into the room and he came out and I held him until he was taken for the prep (sadly I have Done this before and It never gets any easier, but today was the hardest thing I have ever had to do . But I promised him that he was ready, I would do that for him. ![]() It's not everyday you see a 6' 270lbs guy weeping in public. I will really miss my Cayman, he has outlasted a fiance and several girlfriend's ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Black cats are the best.
I was told they are all part Siamese; not sure if that is true, but my black cat is curious, vocal, attuned to people, and still playful after 17 years. Your friend looks just like mine. RIP kitty.

Damn..another hole in your heart. We who have lost pets understand the sorrow you feel...but there's small comfort in knowing that.

You do what you can for them, for as long as you can, and then when they let you know it's time, you do the hardest thing for you to do.... for them.
And if you don't shed some tears then something is wrong with you.... Very sorry for loss Byron. |

I'm so sorry, Byron. It's a bit cliche' but I hope you also celebrate his life, and know that you did well by him. He knew that and was happy. RIP Cayman.

G'day!

I'm so sorry, Byron, my friend.
Been there and done that and it's one of the hardest decisions a person will ever make. But you did the right thing by your furry companion and he is now in a better place. It's the final act of love. And the most important you'll ever demonstrate. Love you man.....
