I saw the other thread, but didn't know who it was.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1151384-shane-macgowan-rip.html?highlight=macgowan

Looks like Herr-O also got him posted into JoeBob's thread
Ultimate Death Fairy Thread.....semi famous, who cares, people who just died.....

I've heard of the Pogues. I have a Pandora channel that was created from Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys. I think the Pogues have come up in that channel before.

Yep, I decided to queue up my Flogging Molly station. The 7th song that was played was "The Limerick Rake" by the Pogues.

I have no idea what introduced me to the music that caused me to create a station full of Irish, Scottish, and maybe some English music, but I love it. If I had to categorize it, I'd probably (in my uneducated mind) call it folk music or pub music, although I'm sure cognoscenti would probably tell me that it's half a dozen different genre.

< edit >

Upon further research, It looks like most of the music that is in my station is considered "Celtic punk". According to wikipedia "the genre was popularized in the 1980s by the Pogues."

That is a strange and frustrating way to mess up the Gaelic word for "kiss".

I am a fan. I love Celtic music and go through phases where this is all I listen to.

Celtic music is always WAY better live. Always.

Pogue is also a slang terms for ‘welfare’. So if you are on the Pogue, this means you are getting some form of government aid. I always guessed this was what they named the band after.

RIP Mr. MacGowan.

Tom Waits on Shane MacGowan in 1999:
"Shane has the gift. I believe him. He knows how to tell a story. The Pogues are a roaring, stumbling band. These are the Dead End kids for real. Shane's voice conveys so much… It's whimsical and blasphemous, seasick and sacrilegious."
