Kidney stones

It's my turn with stones again. I'm looking for the least invasive and easiest treatment.

I meet with the doctor tomorrow for my follow up (been waiting for 3 months) CT scan showed 4 stones, two 1mm stones in the left kidney and a 15x8mm and a 6mm in the right.
I know how bad they hurt, but I am interested in treatment experiences with the least time out of work.

I can not help with treatments but I had one last week. WOW that is the most pain I have ever felt. I did not have any decent pain meds for a couple of days and then went back to get some, that helped a lot. Good luck with your treatment.

The pain meds I was given where like taking tictacs. Bourbon worked the best.

Interesting you confirm that, I did consider a couple shots of Tequila but was talked out of it.

For Men, Kidney Stones are the worst pain scenario possible. I was fortunate to have passed the stone, but the trip it took to do so was off the charts in pain. My BP was thru the roof, Diuliad in the ER was my savior.

I describe the pain as a red hot knitting needle being stabbed into your abdomen.

It must be kidney stone season. I passed a 2 mm stone this past weekend. That's the second episode in 20 years. Fingers crossed for no more repeats.

My brother-in-law is very susceptible to kidney stones and takes daily medication to control it. I think it's potassium citrate.

It sounds like what this thread needs to be discussing is what you can do to avoid them. I'm sure that a big part of it is individual chemistry.

I would think that something (besides meds) could be done to help most people, but maybe not.

Avoiding certain foods, or seeking out more of certain foods. Drinking more fluids or more of some kinds of fluids or....?

No expert advice on how to avoid, that is what your Doctor is for. Drink lots of clear liquids daily to keep the kidney and bladder plumbing at top of game.

For my first and only KS event I picture the scene from movie Braveheart where they were pulling out his intestine on the table. By the time I got to ER I was barfing on the gurney. They got sick of mopping it up and gave me something that made it all go away. Wish I could have some of that at home just in case.

Drink lots of water, and avoid soda.

Chemical analysis of the stones can help identify conditions that can make you more prone to having kidney stones. My brother-in-law has IBS which turns out to be a known contributing factor.

The standard advice is to keep well hydrated, but I have my doubts.

Peppy, 6mm is on the larger side. I hope it gets resolved without too much discomfort.

This came out of my assembly guy a few months back. Naturally. That was the smaller one.
That's an AAA battery for comparison.

I've had them throughout the years. One time, it took a month to pass. It was nice being on Oxy for a whole month. lol What knocked it out? A vigorous drive in my 930. I was parking the car at Costco when I felt something drop in my loins. Decided to drive home and out came the stone!

I drink water until my back teeth are floating, pain is gone then.

15mmX8mm is the one I'm having nightmares about

For the guys that have had them, when you do your yearly dental visit, do they have to do a lot of the scraping to get plaque off? I've seen some pics and videos where folks get a crazy build up of stone-like material attached to their teeth. I went something like 24 years between dental checkups once, and they were shocked because it was basically a regular light cleaning.

I'm wondering if the same chemistry that keeps me from having much build up in my mouth may also help keep me from having k.stones.

I also used to drink a lot of soda, but stopped cold turkey probably 20 years ago. Now I mostly just drink water. I'm not too worried about it.

I had one several years ago and when it “kicked”, it put me on the floor. It wouldn’t pass, so surgery was done- took half a day total and I was back home. Saw the X-ray and that thing looked like an medieval mace.

They put a stent in so my urethra wouldn’t heal together. Out patient to have the stent removed- no drugs for that. They have some sort of grabber with a camera that injects water as it goes up and makes you squirm and make little girl sounds, but no pain, just a freaky feeling. Afterwards you got to pee real bad because they basically filled your bladder in reverse.

The urologist did give me a list of foods to be eaten in moderation- I’ve done really good at avoiding spinach- you know, doctor’s orders! I think she said there are 4 types of stones. I was also told natural calcium was fine, but avoid artificial calcium products.

Good luck! I’ve had several women who have given birth and had kidney stones and they said the stones were worse.
