Shared Tesla Charging Stations, first Ford, now Chevy joins

I love it, Tesla stock up like 135% this year.

What's going to feed these stations? Solar panels? Windmills?

Good question. We need to get our energy production and distribution up to speed. So far I don't see it happening. Out here there are solar power companies buying farm land to put up solar panel farms, while huge expanses of parking lots, shopping center roofs, and private homes and garages just sit there baking in the sun. People can't seem to get away from the idea that they have to buy all their power from someone. I don't see a lot of difference between buying it from a solar company and an fossil fuel company. You are still dependent on someone else, and a big expensive distribution system.
Distributed, local production would lessen the need for huge distribution infrastructure and minimize one of the bottlenecks.
I see a localized production of solar, augmented with fossil and nuclear as the solution, but I don't see it happening. There are too many companies invested in make electricity that you could make yourself and selling it to you.

Farmers might be making the choice to plant solar panels instead of crops..
Center of the highway looks like a good spot.
I always envisioned high speed rail there.

But clean cheap electricity would be disruptive technology, and wouldn't work with the business model.

There will always be a standard connector/charge rate in the future, and being first to market it looks like Tesla will it.
They will get licensing royalties for a while.
I just wonder if it's a good enough design to remain so.

Interesting idea. Parking lots full of solar panels which would provide shade for the cars and power for whatever. Obviously, the initial cost is huge. Also, you'd need to idiot proof things. Too many morons that would be running into stuff since there would then be poles supporting the solar panels that every idiot out there would be running into. Pretty cool idea, at least in the south.

It would require quite a bit of protective infrastructure. You've got cars with drunks and loaded semis hurtling down the road that could end up off the road at high speed. Just requires planning and spending.

I am frequently on I-10. The center median is where I-10 is expanding from 4 lanes to 6 lanes with a dividing jersey barrier.

The drive to my AZ 2nd home via the I-10 is going being EV enabled by CalTrans.
The design will be Tesla based.
This will make it less than a 100 miles between charging stops from SoCal to the AZ border.
The future electric trucks that distribute from the LA/Long Beach ports will now have the infrastructure capabilities needed.
Good time to be a C-10 Electrical Contractor doing system installs.

How much additional generating capacity do you think EV's will require in ten years? 25%, 50%, 75%? Go ahead, take a guess.

(Make sure you consider the bidirectional capacity that might be part of the solution.)

This is helpful to TSLA as it undercuts the investment in competitive charging station networks.

Fine print in the GM and F agreements will be important - what rate are non-TSLA cars charged, do TSLA cars have priority, what revenue does TSLA get, can TSLA terminate/change the arrangement, will other brands have similar access (VW, BMW, MBZ, Volvo, etc).

You can see how the last part might be helpful to F and GM.

Perhaps Mr. Musk is thinking the long-picture. Expanding the empire. Kinda like Rockefeller and Standard Oil 150 yrs ago. 17,000 Superchargers, 150,000 levels 2 and 3 just in the US and A.

Maybe more like Henry Ford + John D. Rockefeller + JP Morgan. Control the raw materials (nickel & cobalt), production, distribution, fueling, etc. Waiting for the Tesla Electricity Company. Could be nuclear power using his rockets to send the spent waste into the sun.

Jeez, I don't know if I like anything/everything about Musk but I'm happy that he's one of us.

Out behind some wooded area behind our house was a huge tobacco field. A few years ago it was all turned into solar panels. Originally they wanted to build a new high school there but were concerned with all the pesticides and fertilizer in the ground. Used to be a nice place to take the dogs for a walk. Haven't been out there since the panels went up. Do notice a lot more bear activity on our property since.

For the short term, charging your EV between midnight and 6 am seems to be the way to go. Cost of power can be cheaper during the lower usage times. On a 220 v. circuit most all EVs should get a full charge in 6 hrs. Personally, I don't think I will be interested in an EV until the range gets to be at or over 400 miles. One full tank of gas in my truck (23 gallons) will take me almost 600 miles!

True, if you are a net buyer of power. I charge my car during the day when the power comes from my solar panels. We shut the AC off at dusk and only run the pool pump and heater during the day. Power we download at night costs $.092 and the credit we get for the power we upload during the day is only $.02, so using electricity during the day and idling as much as possible at night is what is working for us.
