Traded in my grandfathers drill press

			for a better drill press!

My grandfather bought his in ‘81. It became mine in 2002, was a king heavy duty made in taiwan. Sort of sucked but price was right. Floor stand. But saw this at the reuse place, $300, love at first sight. Came with drawers of sharp shiny bits, foot pedal and some vices including this big vice. Was sick of that floor stand drill, this will bolt to workbench. ![]() ![]()

If pressed, I would say we all have our vices.... I was looking for a drill press a while back for a project I had going on. Didn't find one that I liked enough to buy.

My g'pa had one of the earlier built radial saws...suspended from a track.

He was a carpenter by trade and loved that saw. My uncle took it over when he couldn't use it anymore....then he sold it.

I have only one Vise....my dad's old Wilton. Pretty sure he bought it as war surplus...not dated like the newer (1950's & up) ones.

The action is smooth and its really quiet. Previous drill was a big manky thing - loud and very difficult to adjust.

Problem with drill press, once i had one its difficult to justify upgrading. But this is really something from a different era, really nice. Even wife approved. Hope i can maintain it as well as previous owner. |

That's an inappropriate joke for this thread, KC. Take it to another park, on another Sunday, please.

It's pretty unlikely, but I'd like something like this with a sort of Art Deco feel. ![]() ![]() And then I want one of these because they are so cool. ![]()

I’m with you on the deco drills. Saw some recently and got the jones. I have a nasty Taiwanese one from grandpa as well. Does the job. But no style or quality.

I have one of those! I put it on the side of my jeep shed. I actually got it out of a barn basement on a post. Now its outside in the weather. Ugh. But the one I actually use is also an antique its a buffalo forge. I only use it when i have to drill a ton of holes exactly the same. Which is rare. I much prefer the hand drills in the bench vice. So much easier than fooling with the drill press.

Since we are talking about antique drill presses, and vices, I have a hankering for an old school mechanical arbor press.

That was the only press we had when I worked at the VW dealer, and it worked every bit as good as as the big hydraulic table presses I was used to using . Id love to get one for my home garage

My grandfathers were not very mechanical. If a bigger nail or screw did not fix it, it was to complex. My dad's dad never learned to drive, and my grandmother drove him everywhere.

Both men were major gardeners and planted enough vegetables to feed the neighbors and friends at church. The only tool I have of my mom's side grandfather is his vice. It is rather small, and I often think about getting a bigger and better one, but it has served my needs and it was grandpa's so it stays. My dad's side grandfather did give me his old tool chest, that he got from his dad. And it may well go back even further. It is made of wood, and has hand made nails to hold it together, and at some point someone nailed sheet metal to the outside with more hand made nails. I keep my skill saw and lesser used stuff in it. It had this Ford wrench in it. I have long wanted to find a old Ford guy to identify just what it is. It just hangs on a wall as a display in my garage.
