Skull in Nazi helmet ‘rise from the grave’ after Ukraine dam blast

Ok this is freaky. Once the water drained from the dam that recently burst in Ukraine, they found the remains of several WW2 soldiers, one of which was still wearing his Nazi helmet

A warning from a watery grave?

Okay- I'll chime in, and probably parf this in an instant, but, this really is not an uncommon thing in Russia/Ukraine. This really chimes into the WW2 sentiment of the region.

A lot of the peat bogs? Frost heave cycles do this. In Northern Russia the Rivers freeze and flow backwards, causing huge bogs.

There are numerous youtube channels that cover this. For this area, WW2 really is a recent thing, as farmers and such dig this up every year. Perhaps a "Nazi." Perhaps grandad. No wonder sentiment runs so deep.

Here's one channel- These guys will just feel down, pull out a leg, or some guns, skulls, or whatever. I didn't even watch the video I posted, as there are so many.

(edit- One thing that seems to preserve well are Nazi condoms- maybe not in this video, but in others.)

Go to the youtube channel "WWII METAL DETECTING" and take your pick.

Russians blew that dam, or rather its predecessor, in 1941 to slow the German invasion. The dam was repaired, then in 1943 the Germans blew it to slow the Russian offensive. Lot of war and long memories in that location, blowing the dam was probably always in the Russia plan.

https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-dam-destruction-flood-1941-world-war-ii-german-invasion/32448719.html

It’s not entirely clear to me how lasting the defensive effect is. The Ukranians didn’t lose any troops or equipment, the floodwaters are receding, in a couple weeks the ground will be dry and if the Ukranians had planned to cross downstream of the dam, they can do it. Crossing upstream will be easier as the reservoir will be much smaller. And from reports, it seems like the Ukranians may be attacking in a different location entirely. I do wish the West had gotten them aircraft.

Here's a "happy" classic that came up in my feed after watching the others.

The suffering here is just beyond comprehension.

Condoms, Amputations, Splints, and all.

I really hope that German Soldier gets a decent burial but I can't see the German government taking a risk to get the body out.

I haven't looked but this would have to be big news in Germany.

A family would receive closure if somehow the bones could be ID'd.

Likely there is usable tissue within the teeth to test the DNA

Hopefully they can extract this tissue and send the poor guy home.

I believe commercial websites like 23AndMe have a database which government agencies have access to. I believe relatives all over the world can even be located.

Can’t speak for the German military but the US military has been collecting DNA of all uniformed personnel for 20 years now . . .

Hopefully they will be able to get closure.

Something I've been thinking about... This whole story could be "propaganda".

People tune in and feel empathy for a anonymous soldier who fell decades ago and then they're "reminded" that there's a war raging right now (that needs continued support from The West). It doesn't matter that he was a German soldier who may or may not have been an actual Nazi. Most of those were in the SS anyway so it's entirely possible this man did not believe in their ideals.

- What matters is that he was young and he was cut down in his prime serving his nation.

Lots of those Youtube metal detector guys dig up German soldiers' dog tags and then turn them over to the German embassy. Germans kept and still keep pretty good records, and those tags are pretty easy to track down to surviving family members. DNA would only be necessary if no dog tags were found. And even then there could be some other ID'able stuff found.
