He was a great, smart and funny man. He had a house boat in Sausalito and my Dad and I would spent a night there with him during holidays. This picture is him on the right with his best friend and the friend's wife.



My Dad always told me Byron was the smartest man he ever met, not even a horse race. That, my friends, is tall cotton.

He never married and was very good to me in all the ways superb Uncles are.

I ran wide on a freeway exit in the bay area in my SAAB 900 turbo. Bent three wheels, but the ride was smooth and composed. I think maybe I should post that in SAAB SPG headlight headlight bowls thread...

My dad thought cars were just big expensive appliances that he parked outside. No cool cars at our house when I was a kid.

BUT, about the time I got the car bug, we lived on base. I would pedal my bike over to the BOQ, (Base Officer's Quarters) for the single officers. Mostly pilots, or doctors in their 20s, decent paycheck, and nothing except toys (or alcohol) to spend it on.

The parking lot was always full of Sunbeam Tigers, Jags and my love, Porsches. I had learned to park my bike far away from the cars, and I stood back and was careful to never touch the cars at all.
Some of the pilots knew my dad was a pilot, so I had a little tiny bit of acceptance.

If I was lucky, one of the guys was washing the car, or changes points and plugs to get some car to start. They tolerated me.

I almost exploded with joy when one of them let me sit in his 911.

Now at car shows I always let kids sit in my car if their shoes are clean.

That Jag is a perfect toy car in LA or southern California car. Useless in most of the rest of the country where it rains, and has real weather.

Thanks for the original posting. Jay's show is always entertaining and informative.

Getting back to the original topic.... I've always loved the look and sound of Jag XK's, especially the XK120 and Series I E-type.

I was a TR guy, having owned a TR3A, TR6 and TR8, and until relatively recently I didn't have the time or money for one of the Jags I really liked and the restoration/repairs/maintenance that went with them.

Now that I have the money and time, I find that I don't really want to go back to old Brit sports cars. I mean Jay certainly likes his, but he has poured a LOT into making it immaculate and reliable. I have to say that I've gotten very used to the "more modern" (i.e. 35 years old rather than 70) features and performance of my classic 911.
