I like old cars and have a big soft spot for American cars of the 60s up through the early 70s. I could see myself getting an American car from that period. After the last 4 cars that I've owned (2 Porsches and 2 miatas) for the past ~25 years, I suspect the driving experience of a completely stock old American car would be a disappointment. I would probably want to perform a few minor modifications (mostly brakes, suspension, wheels and tires)(no crazy 20" chrome wheels, but also not 14" wheels, maybe 15-17" and "retro", just something to enable better tire options). Possibly a crate motor or motor upgrade if needed.

A 70s American car is never going to perform like a Porsche, but I think you could give them decent levels of grip with a still comfortable ride and safe handling/stopping and what they excel at which is V-8 grunt and acceleration and old school character.

I had a silver on red '79 T/A with orange graphics. Equiped with a 301 and an auto, it was slow beyond belief.
Yet it's still one of my favorite cars. It rode very well, and it looked stunning.

As I recall, you couldn't get a manual trans with AC. Manual cars used left over poncho 400s from 78. Everything else used the Olds 403 or god awful 301.

40 grand will get you this 25,000 mile yellow 1976 Trans Am. Looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Dealer is about 40 miles from me.

That is gorgeous and just needs gold snowflakes to be perfect.

As of earlier today I have officially quit buying cars whether a Trans Am or that Saab Aero in VT. One of my customers specializes in 928s, it's all he does, just dropped off an intake kit today and we were talking about my car and ended up he'll be finishing the rebuild on my S4 motor... just don't have the time and he's an expert so finishing the short block and making it a long block will be cake for him.
