I left a $20 bill at a local Mexican restaurant for a $20 meal ($40 total) and my buddy who was with me was freaking out. I thought it was funny to make him squirm so much to see such an act of generosity.

This guy has never held a job - due to wealthy parents and a trust. And I've worked all my life - including jobs that involved tips.

That feeling when someone leaves you a generous tip stays with you.....and for me it started as a delivery guy while in college delivering pizzas and subs.

Entitled? Did you even read those numbers I posted in post 68? Working wage? Expecting a tip before food is brought to me where I have to get my own fork, fill my own water and clean my own table before I seat down? Who's the entitled one? A tip is for good service not a given.

All that black or minority stuff are over, I see many white waiters or waitress humping working hard just like everyone else. Many are young (ish) and may have a college degree. Its suppose a stepping stone job onto better things. Now there are professionals who wait tables at higher end restaurants that do OK.

I have found that people who have worked in the business are the best tippers.
On another note, I ordered a sandwich from one of my favorite local restaurants, on line, so no customer interaction. And when I get there to pick up my food, the girl puts out the receipt for me to sign, and of course there is a area for the tip.
So for an online order, where literally, only the cook does anything, after reading off the order off the monitor.
But yes, I still tipped.

There are job in high end restaurants where you have to buy the job to work there. Or used to be. A waiter or captain can make 6 figures. It can be like a NYC taxi medallion. But those were at one time a million bucks. Now, $80,000 thanks to gig drivers.

AFAIK, paying to work at a Beverley Hills or Wilshire restaurant may be a thing of the past.

Tip for good service, not for buying something. 10% for decent, 15% max for good service. When I leave 10% my wife starts freaking out.... Why so much?? :)

It's insane when you order food for pickup and when you get there, the CC terminal is asking how much you would like to tip. The food is already overpriced at most places. If you are tipping to pickup food, you might as well be tipping the self checkout at the grocery store. :p

Enough of this living wage crap. Service jobs, are for experience, not to live off.

I WILL take exception to that. If you want anyone to pick your fruit or man the stocking of shelves, or flip your burger (whatever), you better appreciate the labor force. And give them some credit for being there. Too many people would rather NOT work and stay on the dole.

The tipping thing is a result of artificial wages and corporate greed. We did not come up with the right answer on that one.

When I started to notice that the pre-programmed amounts on the checkout screen were around 18%, 20%, 25% I asked about it and they replied that costs/prices have gone up.

Since I knew it wouldn’t be well received, or simply that they wouldn’t be able to understand the math, I hesitated to respond that tipping the usual percentage we always did is already a bigger tip because it’s a percentage of a higher amount.

I rarely tip before service is given any more.

Another good reason to avoid dependency on DoorDash:

"Customers who don't tip DoorDash drivers will wait longer for deliveries, company warns"

Today I worked with my former helper. Back when my landscaping business was still going strong. We've stayed in touch since I semi-retired and he still is available on occasion when I ask. I like him and we are good friends and he works hard.

I always pay cash and pay well above what the norm is. Today I included an extra $20 and told him "That's for Bella."

"Bella" is his Blue Heeler.

Dude, have you ever thought your argument would hold up better if you dropped the completely out of touch racist Boomer using extrapolated numbers tone?

Just wow!

I love the machines that start out with an 18% tip as the cheapest of the options except "other."

Yes, I saw that. Count me out.
Somehow they’re killing it though with the stock up over 20% this week alone.

The haircut places and a lot of the restaurants around here have them...I hate them.

Right! Sorry, but 15% is a normal tip for good (not amazing) service at a sit-down restaurant, especially considering current inflated prices that already include living wage hikes. And naturally, only on the pre-tax amount.

And let’s stop the madness of over-tipping the same for taxis (convention says 10% maximum), haircuts, takeout, etc. Of course amazing service deserves recognition.

When I eat at a fast food place where I ordered myself at the counter and stood there to pick up my own food I have no problem hitting the ‘Other’ button even if they’re looking right at me tapping their fingers on the counter. I stand there expressionless and just hit ‘$0.00’ or ‘None’. Honestly, what world is this.

If I want to throw something in the jar AFTER I’ve gotten my food, eaten it, and actually enjoyed it, then I will. But if that same person who handed me the tray, starts cleaning the table next to me while spraying cleaner in my direction, then no.

Unbelievable, but one time the pre-programmed amounts at a fast food place were 20%, 25%, 30%. Really?
