Since I knew it wouldn’t be well received, or simply that they wouldn’t be able to understand the math, I hesitated to respond that tipping the usual percentage we always did is already a bigger tip because it’s a percentage of a higher amount.

I rarely tip before service is given any more.

Funny, we have a law in CA that if an item has a price marked on it, right or mistake, that's what the cashier is required to ring up. I bought an expensive level that way. Was mismarked along with others. The cashier says that's not the price. I had a manger come over to the rack and see the 60 dollar levels marked at 15 bucks. No label switching. I got it for 15.

I haven't run into this yet, but if a menu says something is xx dollars, that's what I better see on my bill, with tax if applicable, and that's it. Different story if a notice is posted. In that case I'll leave.

Yes! That’s right. :) It has only happened to me once, but I was happy to take the “discount” because for that one law that helped me, there are 99 other laws working against me.

This reasoning makes no sense when people say they need to ask for a higher tip percentage (because prices are higher now). The price we have paid for the meal (or whatever it is) has also gone up. I'm paying more for the meal and the tip is proportional to the meal so they're already getting a larger gratuity.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a customer a few days ago. I was in PA and she was in AZ. I said I'd call her in three hours. She asked, "Is that your time or my time?"

I’m not sure I could have suppressed the laugh.

Just wow!

I am responding to someone that mentioned tipping started for the black waiters who made little money to help support their laving wage. This is 2023, I pointed out that all should be equal pay or otherwise. Today, around here anyway, there are all sort of talks about helping the minorities then I must ask what about the whites that work the same jobs that are working just as hard? They don't get the fair treatment. Hack, I noticed many of them don't ever get hired for many of these jobs. They lose out. BTW, I am not a Boomer and a minority. Only difference is I call it the way I see it no sugar coating it, nothing bias.

I’m back to 20% at most. Except my favorite servers.

flatbutt 11-02-2023 08:13 PM

I never put tips on the receipt. I give wait staff cash.

Do you tip the guy at Home Depot that helped you put wood in your truck?

Now that I would probably do. First, he's already done a service above and beyond and second, those guys are just about all folks who got downsized out of a better job or can't afford to retire and will appreciate the tip, while not expecting it.

I always offer but most times they politely refuse. That may be due to my age and physical condition. Most often I benefit from a kind stranger.

All the old guys at my HD store just hang out in electrical.

Yep, really. I ran into the owner of the local Skyline franchise and told him what I think of the new tip machine. It starts at 20% and goes up to 30%. He said, "My girls work pretty hard and I just want them to be paid."

Now it's my turn to ask - REALLY?

If you want them to be paid, pay them!
I didn't say that, but he went on to add that if he paid them more he would have to raise prices and then we would have to pay more for our food, implying that the tip is optional. So he's leaving paying "his girls" up to customers, and it is optional. Good to know.

I completely agree with you.
I'm just not going to react to any tipping prompt madness. I'll tip what I want regardless of what comes up on the screen.

BUT CHECK THIS OUT - last year at an ice cream shop here in Los Angeles, I couldn't figure out how to skip the suggested 18%-22% tip (again, before anything was made or the order was even put in) so I had to ask the guy how to skip that step. He said press the green button, then press 1, and then GO. Jeez. How freakin' ridiculous!
I was so close to just leaving, but I know my girl would have been disappointed. Still, I wasn't going to let their manipulation work.

When I go to my local Subway the owner usually runs the cash. He zeros out the tip before handing you the machine.

I dislike the post-covid trend of pushing tips for everything under the sun. It’s easy to feel subtly pressured into it, but I usually resist it. That said, many of you sound like entitled old people who think no one deserves a living wage. The reason the tipping model exists for jobs like restaurant servers is because it’s a category of job that was explicitly excluded from the first minimum wage laws in the 60s, and the reason for that was because service jobs were heavily non-white (which is to say black). I much prefer the model common to places like Europe where restaurant servers are paid a normal wage and tipping is not a part of their main source of income.

Chick-Fil-A .... I don't tip at fast food joint where ya order at the counter and seconds later they hand you a delicious sammich ... I always say Thank You ... they always reply My Pleasure :). During covid and drive thrus, I always tried to pass on my stimilus $$ (I didn't need it) to folks....

The very polite CFA workers would NOT accept cash tips .... never... and I always tried.

Nope ..... My Pleasure :)

Rick Lee 11-03-2023 02:11 PM

CFA is the one place where I'd like to tip and would be happy to do it when ordering, as I know they will always be nice, prompt and get it right. I hate everyone and I'm even in a good mood when waiting in a long drive-thru line at CFA, knowing I will only encounter nice people there.
