Star Trek "Discovery" the new series

I happened to brush across a real Trekkie the other day, he knew star dates, the sequences of the franchise timelines, the errors they have made, so on and so forth.

He even has dressed up as a Klingon for a few of the conventions.

I am just a audience viewer compared to such a person, so I had to ask: Are you signing up for the CBS ALL ACCESS in order to watch the up coming series "Discovery"?

His answer was NO.

One of the primary reasons he voiced is item #5 below.

'Star Trek: Discovery': 5 things for non-Trekkies to know

5. These are not your grandparents’ Klingons. One legacy of executive producer Bryan Fuller’s time at the helm — he stepped down as showrunner last fall — was to get the Klingons an upgrade. “One of the things he really, really wanted to do was shake up the design of the Klingons, and one of the first things that he ever pitched to us … was his aesthetic for the Klingons and how important it was that they … not be the thugs of the universe,” Harberts said, “that they be sexy and vital and different from what had come before.”
Here is what I am seeing, they have a franchise that has taken a few technical missteps - hard core fans have for the most part forgiven such transgressions, regular viewers just have looked the other way or didn't notice.

The CBS All Access venture depends on legacy fans and viewers and these are perhaps two different groups.

Legacy fans respect accuracy , continuity, and consistency.

Viewers and new viewers perhaps just want to be entertained and welcome new twists, new interpretations and a certain freshness.

Value wise, I don't see how staking a network's entire future on a single program series is going to fly. Yea there are other programs, but are they cable good?

What is the competition?

Traditional cable TV, satellite, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and so forth?

What of "over the air broadcasts" where CBS was born and currently operates in?

Services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are growing much faster than traditional TV — here's how much
Number of cord-cutters in 2017, according to The Convergence Research Group - Business Insider

I am too cheap to pay for something I've always gotten for free, and the hardcore Trekkie is upset about changing how the Klingons look and act.

This leaves new viewers that perhaps saw a few of the theatrical releases by various directors including that sometimes idiot and destroyer of Star Trek and Star Wars - JJ Abrams.

Time will tell.

Other online TV services when they started didn't even have a featured show with such a legacy, and were just mixes of old things and the unproven.

Who is signing up?

A Kilngon that is sexy and vital and different from what had come before. WFT.

The entire franchise has been built on the warrior Kilngon. Of course Commander Worf really helped flesh out the basis of a Kilngon as driven by honor and to die in battle as the ultimate way to get on to the afterlife in Stovokor.

No I am a life long Trekkie. I will not pay to see Discovery. I might watch it in a few years when it is on Amazon Prime for free.

The number one thing I loved about Star Trek was a positive outlook for the future. Technology had eliminated famine and need and medical advances had eliminated most illness. In recent few decades all Science Fiction seems to be an apocalypse or post apocalypse world. It has been done to death.

I am not hard core with Trek (more so with Star Wars) but they have not done anything with the new series to make me want to pay money for it. Same as the reboot movies. I do not pay to see those in the theater, I watch them when the come to Amazon or Netflix.

I understand every writer wants to put their spin or touch on the story. But why not just start with a different species. Why change the Klingons? Just invent a new species. Make them anything you want.

All of the original shows have been re-mastered into high definition from the original film stock. Some of the props are just silly how bad they are. On a 1960s era broadcast TV they looked fine. In HD you can tell it is a piece of junk. The swords or weapons they use look look something a high school stage performance made.

You have to watch the original series with an eye towards the story and ignore the crummy props. It is just a TV show.

Nah, I just set the resolution on the TV to 320x200 and it looks just like the old days!

Pass. Everything after TNG sucked, and even that was seriously flawed.

God, how much I hated Data.... but the worst was DS9, IMO.

There were some pretty bad episodes on TNG, but some pretty good ones too. Like Data's daughter.

DS9 kept jumping in time or across to the other universe. Voyager just went over the top on tech. Enterprise wasn't bad.

The reboot movies are getting somewhat better. I would like to never see another CGI lens flare ever again.

Yea, the lens flair is stupid. Like explosions in space and lots of noise.

Oh, I agree--there were plenty of good and bad episodes. In TOS as well.

I don't mind Data so much as I mind the formulaic scripts, Picard's pu$$iness, and (God help us) Wesley.

Jeri Ryan was (still is, actually) hot. But, let's be honest: Voyager is best watched on mute. I recall exactly one episode where the writing didn't completely suck.
