P0660 Jag content.
Need some thoughts. I've searched the bigger Jag forums but they are not even close to Pelican in terms of knowledge.
2012 XK with ~40k miles. Recently got a CEL with P0660 which is Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Also got at the same time P0020, P0010, P0013, P0023 which are all 4 bank A and B Camshaft Position Actuator Circuits Car was coming close to due for service and the simple most common fixes for these codes is an oil change. Ordered some oil and was shipped Ford Spec Mobil1 0-20W instead of 5-20W. Annoyed but 0-20W is certified for the car so went ahead and changed it. P0660 cleared but the other 4 did not, they are in Permanent status, not active, so still have a CEL. OK, figured these were the types of codes where the car needs to be driven X miles and X warm up cycles for the computer to self clear. Drove the car just short of 500 miles which should be plenty and a dozen or so warm up cycles. Around here an active CEL is an automatic fail for annual inspection and I need to renew registration. Today went out and picked up some Castrol 5-20w and did another oil change. First start after oil change immediately got P0660 again, cleared it, cycled car and it's gone. I have no active codes but CEL is still on and the other 4 are still in Permanent status. What's going on here? I find it very difficult to believe all four Cam Position Actuator Circuits went at the same exact time in conjunction with P0660. Car runs and drives fine and here is the really odd bit, my OBD reader reports MIL, malfunction indicator lamp (CEL) is Off but it's clearly on. Frustrated. Any ideas? Thanks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689455480.jpg |
When was the last time the timing belt was changed?

I get where you are going, jumped a tooth. Motor has 4 chains. I don't think it's possible for both banks to jump a tooth at the exact same time since they don't share a chain. |
Well its not a stretched timing belt.. very odd that all four actuators faulted at once..
Its also how my Subie tell me it time to change the oil..P code right camshaft actuator... oil change and it goes away.. |

and I've always gotten an answer. I'm On_a_Jag over there. |

They should not be triggering the CEL. Codes that can't be cleared with a OBD scan tool trigger the CEL for a period of time, X #miles or X heat cycles then clear themselves if they don't get detected again during the X period. The CEL is clearly on in the dash but my scan tool says it's off. But if it were off the codes should not be flagged as Permanent, I think? Anyone know? |
Just a google search..

Jag actually make their dealer service diag suite available for a free download. I have it. But need a Mongoose cable to interface from OBD port to USB on laptop. Real Mongoose cables are $450. Can get Chinese knock offs for under $100 but risk of bricking the cars computers goes up. A bricked computer is going to cost a lot more than the $350 saved on the cable. |

Are the camshaft actuators working?

I’m over on the Jag forum too… have an ‘05 S Type R
This is a long shot, but proved true in my case. STR started getting CEL with several random codes, cam sensors, HVAC issues, evap system leak. Started trying to rule things out like you are. A logical approach. Got very frustrated as things kept popping back up. In the end it was a battery that was old and getting weak. It apparently couldn’t process all the data at the various control modules. New battery and all good. 👍 Cooper |

I always double lock the car to shut everything down to avoid the inherent parasitic draw. Had not driven the car in 2 weeks or so and was getting the “turn vehicle on or entertainment display will shut down from weak Battery” I’ve never seen that one before and car has never given any indication that the battery is heading south but that doesn’t mean it isn’t. TX is harsh on batteries, i get 3 years out of them. |
Is there such a thing as a hard reset on these? I do know that older Jags (not necessarily yours) are very battery dependent. Alt output in range?
As with p-cars grounds are always a place to look. I had an early 90's Cadillac that got passed to me when my mother died and it was problematic. Turned out to be the engine to frame ground wire. |

So hot weather kills car batteries. Cold weather kills car batteries. Doesn't that encompass about 3/4 of America?
|
Let's get back to the codes. Done a hard reset or reboot, whatever you want to call it?
I've been told by an automotive electronics expert that once the system is discharged completely it's a good idea to insert a 9v battery for a moment before connecting the battery cables. I think he has a DC variable power supply to bring the computer back gently. BTW, this guy's name is Tony Callas. |
