Austin to California in a 66 Shelby !!!

A buddy and I are flying to Austin tomorrow morning to pick up the 66 Shelby GT-350 he just purchased. Red with white stripes, 4spd car. 45K on the mechanicals. Shelby expert just finished the inspection of the car a few hours ago and said there were no issues. so it's a done deal.

We are flying in and the owner is picking us up at the airport. Then we are picking up the car, getting some BBQ and then we are going to DRIVE the car back home to California. Trailer, whats a trailer.......

I have my suit case full of tools and AAA if we have any issues.

We would like to take Route 66 where possible. Any must see things along the way you guys can recommend. Already have plans for a BBQ joint you guys mentioned in another thread. Cant wait to get some of those big Beef Ribs and listen to that small block for three days.

RT66 is WAY north of Austin...

I hope the car has functioning air conditioning...

We would like to pick it up around Amarillo. Probably don't want to wonder to far off the interstate, but we are game for adventure.

Air conditioning, yes it has 2/60 air. seriously, was that even an option on a 66 shelby? Maybe I should bring the cool shirt from my race suit.

There is a decent car museum on 66 in Santa Rosa NM. Quite a few cool things in the Santa Rosa/ Tucumcari area of NM. The best western in Santa Rosa is nice and gives you a good rate of you tell them you are there SCUBA diving....

It winds from Chicago to L.A.

More than 2000 miles all the way.

- you can indeed pick it up in Amarillo (tho what Amarillo wanted Emmy Lou's baby for is still unclear), or go thru Clovis (where you may be able to meet some of the Clovis People)

IRCC, the best parts are in NM & AZ

there is a thread on Route 66 here in OT I think, and there are entire books written on where to stop what to drive, etc.

a lot of it is close to I-40

we will want a real time pic thread on this, of course!

I'll do a search here for some additional info. This was really a last minute thing otherwise I would have already gotten a book on it. Essentially I'm thinking we will be taking I-40 and then getting on parts of old 66 as we can. I'll definitely post some Pics.

I've done the drive a number of times.

If the car is running well, stay south of 40. The drive from Roswell to Socorro on 380 is nice.

Route 60 out of Socorro to Edgar is maybe my favorite road in the states...

You can head up to 40 from there or go to Show Low and head north on 77 to 40.

I'd do it tomorrow.

Your alternative route could be taking US290 out of Austin, then connecting to I-10 and US90.

Another alternative is to head south to San Antonio and do the entire US90 through places like Hondo, Del Rio, Alpine, Marfa, El Paso, etc. The real West!

Then from El Paso, head up I-25 to Albuquerque and use I-40/US66 to L.A.
