Another proud dad moment

I just had the honor of pinning my son’s badge on him at his oath-taking ceremony. This young man has wanted to serve since he was about 10 years old. He’s 23 now, and just completed the 6 month Nashville PD academy with distinction. He’s a wonderful human being, a trumpet player in the Church choir and a guitar phenom, and always with a smile… exactly what we need more of in uniform. Our loss (and it does feel like that.. he was my wingman) is Nashville’s immense gain. They have one of my Silmaril’s… I hope he can make the difference that he envisions making. I’d take him back in a NY minute.

Steve, it’s funny you say that. Twice on the trip my wife and I said the same thing. Once at the Grand Old Opry where they turned on the house lights and asked all current and former military members to stand for a show of gratitude, and then leaving Nashville when the airlines invite all active duty military to board first. Now, our oldest is in the military, so we don’t have any issue with that. However, the Police Officer on a day to day basis is seeing some of The_Worst of society on some of their worst days. Dead bodies, gruesome auto fatalities, abused innocents, and then throw in some St. George Floyd / Eff the Police elements, and several hundred deaths each year in the line of duty? And then the overnight shifts, the weekends, and mandatory overtime due to staffing shortages… it’s no picnic. It’s a different sacrifice than military service, but a sacrifice all the same. We’re lucky anyone steps up to serve in either capacity these days, and the numbers are dropping fast. They do deserve our thanks.

Congratulations, we as a society really need the police and I hope he knows that the vast majority of us appreciate all the police do and the risks they take to keep us safe.
