I was replying to Steve's scenario. And the OP's scenario: if downstream outlets are dead and the GFCI outlet is live, that is not a GFCI issue, unless the GFCI has failed internally.

These are also a must have, IMO. You can confirm outlet wiring and they'll test a GFCI. And I think they are supposed to be a better test than the button on the GFCI, but I don't remember exactly what I read.

Thanks to all who have weighed in. I have called in an expert so we will see what he says. Using my tester on the GFCI outlet it tests green or all ok. Mystery. When expert sparky figures it out I will post the solution

I think you did the right thing. The root cause of what you're experiencing is probably going to need more expertise than you have.
