Didn't the E-Type Jaguar have inboard brakes at the rear?

I don't know...but I wonder if the same idea could work for an ice car with AWD somehow.

Most EV vehicles have almost wear on the brake pads because of the electric regeneration slows the car. Only in the most extreme braking are the regular brakes used.

Yes, E types did indeed have inboard discs, as did a number of other vehicles. A royal PITA to service.
In corrosive environments the lack of work for the braking system in a vehicle with re-gen leads to seized parts early failure. I suspect this is another factor in Mercedes research.

Rover P6 did. And they were a bugger to change pads on.

These from MB are inside the drive housing and they say they'll last the life of the car.

And did they say what that life was projected to be? 30k miles [for example] isn’t that long…

Perhaps my reading comprehension is lacking. English as a first language will do that I hear - but I failed to see where they said the expected lifespan of either the brake unit or the vehicle it was going into in that article.

I’d be most grateful if you could point out my oversight.

"The luxury automaker developed an innovative braking system that lives inside an electric vehicle's drive unit rather than being attached to the wheels, according to Inside EVs. This clever design promises to eliminate the need for brake maintenance for the vehicle's life, potentially saving drivers thousands in service costs."

Until it’s out of warranty…. lol

No reason to reinvent the wheel.

But yet nothing to say the actual projected lifespan this is based on.

Neither time nor distance.

5 years? 10 years? 50 years? 10k miles? 1 million miles?

You want me to say wow that’s clever at least give me something to faint over.

If my car lasts 20k miles, both tires and brakes last the lifespan of the car. Innovative, no? Has to be worth a puff piece.

It will last the lifespan of the car, if engineered perfectly that will be 1 day longer than its covered by warranty. Reminds me of lifetime fluid in ZF transmissions.

My Go-Kart had inboard brakes in 1966!
The description sounds like they turned a disc brake inside out, making the pads rotate and the disc remain stationary. That's revolutionary?
Whatever. They do need to do something about the brakes on EVs. Conventional disc brakes need to be used often to keep rust off the discs and keep the moving parts moving. Moving the friction part of the braking system inboard and protecting it from the elements would eliminate that problem.

Audi 100 LS also had front inboard. When I was in the army in Germany a buddy had a DKW with inboard front brakes. The car also had a severe oil leak that dripped right on one of the front brakes. Step hard on the brake and it would snap the steering wheel right out of your hands! That MB contraption says so efficient it may never need servicing or replacement. I’d say lookout when it does…$$$.

^^^ It would certainly be something I'd want on the warranty before buying.

I'll never own an EV, so I'm not too worried about it.
