This story is the definition of leadership & USMC tradition.

It's nice to see him honored while he can still enjoy being so.

I have a nephew that is a Marine.

Thanks for posting this fantastic story, Ted.

This part of the story was especially poignant:

Quote:
His wife, Martha Hill, served as the ship’s sponsor. At the event Saturday, she was in a wheelchair; Barnum has been her care provider since she had a stroke about five years ago. Her daughter; two granddaughters, one of whom sang “God Bless America;” and an 11-year-old great-granddaughter were also participants at the event Saturday. Other family and friends were present.

I am proud to call Barney a friend. He is a rare individual and a blast to have a scotch and swap stories. I wore the DDG hat he gave me yesterday in tribute. Talked to him Friday and will be at the commissioning ceremony. He is the real deal…

That's so cool, Chris. I would love to be able to have a conversation with the man. Both my parents are WWII vets and we have always supported our soldiers and sailors....and their families!

Please pass along our gratitude for all he and his family have done for our country - thanks!

Will do - a fond memory is standing with him at the Military Order of the Carabao Wallow in DC and listening to Skunk Baxter (Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers) wail the National Anthem on the electric guitar. Absolutely chilling. Barney is one of those men that looks you square in the eye and has an intensity that is infectious. Great American.

Old, but excellent article on this true leader and hero from the past. Had the good fortune to shake his hand on a visit to D.C. He was walking around the "Wall" and thanking people for visiting. At the time he was working for the Secretary of the Navy not too long after 9-11.
