Yet another reason why it'll be a cold day in Hades before I live in an HOA

https://news.yahoo.com/neighbor-outraged-hoa-decides-tear-103000166.html

Quote:
Power-drunk HOA tries to tear down pristine home over petty rule change

A Redditor got stunned reactions for a post about their parents’ HOA, which they said might tear down a 12-year-old home over a months-old rule change.

The story came from Rogers County, Oklahoma. According to the original poster, their parents’ HOA passed a rule in 2019 requiring houses to be set back 35 feet from the road.

They then shared a picture of a beautiful brick home in their parents’ neighborhood, which, according to the poster, was deemed too close to the road. “These neighbors may have to tear down their house if they are not approved for a Variance Permit,” they said.

If so, the owners’ HOA would be destroying their most valuable asset — and possibly leaving them with a mortgage they had no way of paying off. Meanwhile, they’d be sending an incredible amount of debris to the local landfill, where construction waste already makes up an estimated 10% to 30% of trash globally.

In the photo shared on Reddit, a public notice was visible in the home’s front yard. “It is proposed to change the use of this property by Variance Permit to reduce front building line from 35 feet to 20 feet,” said the sign. It also invited residents to a public hearing about the issue.

Should see the one about a HOA in N. Cal that is on the water... The HOA deemed the town houses and not the regular houses are responsible for the erosion up keep to the private water way to the division. Project budget is 5mil and the HOA demanded 170k from the town house owners and nothing from the regular houses. If the houses were included it would be 3k.

Because it is more fun and satisfying to the pissants that run HOAs to threaten people with the loss of their homes.

HOAs are very popular in north Texas (probably most of Texas), as those legalized extortion rackets allow individuals who are otherwise small in mind and body to feel powerful, and like the OP said, there is no way in hell that I too would ever live in an HOA controlled housing area.

Could not agree more. My previous experience is either they [HOA] do nothing but take your money every month, or over zealous Karen plays Hilter with the subjects. We currently have a small piece of property - NO HOA's in sight. Gonna keep it that way....

I’m not a fan of HOA‘s, but being a homebuilder, I have to ask how did they get it to close to the road? Usually documents are recorded and on the overall plat determining setbacks.

^^^ And therefore is grandfathered in under previous rules/codes . But it's never that easy when the HOA is power drunk .

hoa's are favorites of horrible people because membership is mandatory. it's the only way horrible people get to be part of a club. the worst to have in an HOA is a retired former mid manager type. my goodness are those people misinformed on the subject of their intelligence.

I've only seen one good HOA and it was very limited in power and scope to keep a shared road graded with a bit of overflow to allow for the road to finally be paved and turned over to the county for future maintenance, at which point it would be disbanded. 8 houses, $75/mo for 20 years....

When the HOA actually does what the story says they “may” do, then it’s time to discuss. This reads like a fear mongering bit of fake news. Variances are approved all the time in such matters.

This story reeks of BS. A home that was built to within then allowed setbacks, would not retroactively be required to adhere to new HOA rules. HOA's can be a pain but this particular story rings false and likely falls into the category of click bait.

Click bait story.

If the road and structure predate the HOA covenants there is not **** the HOA can do.

They can bluster all they want but any court will tell them to go pound sand.

I'm the case of the OP, I would not be surprised to see several homes burned to the ground if my home was bulldozed due to this BS.

I'm getting to the point that I withhold comment. Everything seems just plain silly anymore. People need to find something real to do. Those employed by the news media need a reset.

However, I still see the National Enquirer at the checkout. The common denominator of intelligence continues to fall. It's no wonder Walmart is king.

So I agree with this 100%.

Our first owned house was in an HOA. We lasted 3 years, and it was on the market for one of them.
Been in the second for 17…

Never. Again.

I’m with MIB on this one. National Enquirer seems to have higher standards than most other media.
