The Band was a one of a kind original. I have every one of their albums. Robertson was my least favorite member of the band, but he can't be separated from the phenomenon of The Band.
Lavon was without a doubt my favorite. I could relate to him. I have relatives who talk the way he did, and his stories of his youth sound familiar to me. Plus, I went to high school with a family of kids named Hawkins. He was an immense talent, but so self deprecating. Has anyone else simultaneously sang and played drums with the emotion that he did? I think Lavon was 17 years old when he was on American Bandstand with The Hawks. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GVqu2vXgXN8" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The Band was truly a band in the beginning... all equally essential members..... then Robbie became "star struck" and really screwed over Levon and the others :(.
But his talent and music were undeniable.... Warts and all ..... |

The universe loves us, and put Rick, Manuel, Garth, Levon and Robbie together, somehow figured out a way to keep them from killing each other, and channeled song after song and album after album of the most unique and beautiful music of the time through them. Here's to each of their contributions and to Garth, a special nod; I always felt his laconic, shy spirit was what was needed and the others fell back on when massive egos and troubled personalities tried to overwhelm the process. (I don't know that for sure, I just like to think it) |
Interesting, not a huge "Band" fan. There is an interesting older gentleman on our street I have known for a few years. For some reason we were talking about music and he asked me if I have ever heard of the Band, of course I said yes. He proceeded to tell me a story of how he roadied for them and would fill in on Drums as required. RIP

Another hint for the Herr-meister ....
The "guy" I know locally would have been on stage for the Last Waltz tribute that Dave (E38Driver) mentioned he saw a couple of years ago too... |
