Your Best Holiday Souvenir

After reading this, I thought it might make an interesting thread topic

Henry Ford certainly took his holiday souvenir buying seriously

I just read that and was thinking: that would be a cold Ff ing place in a Michigan winter!

On a more serious note, on our first visit to Yorkshire in 2001, our hostess told my wife the her neighbor was an artist who did local scenes. We went next door and introduced ourselves. She was kind enough to invite us in and showed some of her work. The painting which struck me was a landscape in acrylics with a sheep pen in the foreground and stone walls meandering over the fields and hills with the suggestion of a farm in the distance.
That painting has hung on our bedroom wall for 22 years. As the light changes, we sometimes notice patches of color next to the walls of the pen, suggesting flowers. Sometimes it seems the hills have a dusting of snow or perhaps there is a mist. For me it is a warm reminder of my family's roots in the mid 1700s before my great x 5 grandfather Nathaniel brought his family to Nova Scotia.
I think she would only accept £25 for her work, but the lady produced something which has become the most cherished souvenir of our travels.

For me, mostly t-shirts of places I have visited. I wear t-shirts most of the time, and if I get dressed up it is with a Polo shirt. I have a lot of t-shirts.

Scuba diving off of Fiji.

Was around 75-85 feet deep.

Found a shell on the bottom. A Cowrie Shell.

brought it up to the surface and the dive guide got all excited and said I'll clean it up for you.

In Fijian culture, the Golden Cowrie Shell is highly regarded and highly valued.

To me, it was just a cool shell.

several days passed and I asked the guide about it. He was very very reluctant to give it back. I shrugged and said I found it, its mine.

I got it, and on the way back to the airport we stopped at some high end souvenir shops. There on display were their exhibit of Golden Cowrie shells. at $250-400 each. No wonder he didn't want to give it back. Probably a month or two salary for him.

1972 - A 16 YO guy from NY. Spent the summer with my older sister and her husband in Tuscon AZ. Two souvenirs:
-1 10 ga shotgun shell (note: paper) from the goose gun I shot in the desert.
-A souvenir of horseback riding in the desert that I thought looked cool. Take a guess what it is (you AZ people know so lets have some fun with guesses).

They are worthless to anyone else but bring smiles to my face of memories from that summer.

Cowries were used as currency by early human civilizations.
Still a very cool find!
