What my son’s metal detector found

A friend gifted my son a NOS Radio Shack metal detector. It’s a pretty impressive unit, amazing what it found buried in the sand near our place.

Even more amazing is what it found buried in the sand near our place.

Moral of the story, wear shoes and get your tetanus shot.

I told my son next time bring home a ring or at least some loose change.

I'm sure he's better than me. I'm a low level enthusiast metal detector guy. I've got a Garret AT Gold machine.

I've found, umm, thousands of beer bottle tops. Maybe $20 in one and two dollar coins and that's it.

I get asked "Do you ever find diamond rings?" So I bought a massive "diamond" ring from the two dollar shop to bring with me but people stopped asking me. So I didn't even have fun with that' So officially I'm hopeless at it.

I do have a prank planned... My friend Henry - who is always pranking other people, said he is interested in having a go with the Garret and maybe buying his own one. So I'm going to plant the two dollar shop ring in te sand and he can find it on his first explore haha.

Your son has a great future in the recycling business!

Apparently “fishing” with a strong magnet on a long rope dragged along lake bottoms is a thing. Firearms and various valuables are fairly common.

In Florida you have to be 72 years old to use these on the beach.

Todays yutes have embraced that particular fashion trend as well.

The real fashionistas even wear hi-liter shorts with black socks and sandals.

Reminds me of Steve Martin joking about Richard Nixon on the beach at San Clemente.

Nixon was out of office and Martin sets it up with "Picture him walking on the beach", then a pause, "with a metal detector". (Not the real quotes but close enough)

Though we haven’t found anything of value our first 1 1/2 hour venture gave me the opportunity to share some wisdom.

We discussed the dangers of tetanus, different metals, magnetism, ocean currents, and magnetic fields just to name a few.

It was a good father son outing.

. . . oh and about your nail KC911, it was in good shape so I used it. You can have one of the rusted screws if you want.

A young man living across the street from me does this and makes money not only from the finds, but his tic tock too. He picks very difficult terrain like the slope under stairs to the beach.

After seeing the debris, the sandals make sense.

A lady at the beach lost her car keys and said the insurance company were talking about writing off her car due to etc etc. I took her number and found the keys a day later for her.
