Found a Friend Dead
Well, I have brought up my friend Teddy, the 92 year old who was very independent and still lived alone, mowed his own lawn and would drive his Corvaire convertible to crews ins.
![]() ![]() ![]() Well, he emailed me the other day saying that I needed to stop by, as we need to talk. ![]() ![]() Well I swung by Sunday to check on him, and we had the talk, he was upset about how his son in California has been treating him. He was telling me that he didn't have much time left as he is worn out. Well I headed out, picked up a few things for him, and called later to check on him, he said he was fine, but wanted to wait for the walker he ordered to arrive before I took him to the attorney that specializes in Elder Law, I also told him that if he didn't respond to knocking on the door or his phone, that I would break in to check on him, as he said that he was worried about falling and we would get a key made. Well yesterday morning, I stopped by to drop off a few things for him, called and knocked, but he is hard of hearing and has trouble operating his phone. Well, I took heart medication to my mother and had planned on swimming some laps. Well, after I left my mother, I just had a really bad feeling so I stopped by my house to pick up a few tools and go back to Teddy's. I got there and the bag was still in front of the door, so I grabbed the tool, popped out the screen and climbed through the window. I saw the bathroom light on, and he told me that he had fallen in there , so I headed that direction 1st and then checked the bedrooms, nothing, so I headed towards the kitchen, nothing, but then I looked past the kitchen and he was laying face down, so I immediately called 911. He had been gone for a while, and a sight that, sadly I can't get out of my head. The EMTS arrived, confirmed that he had been gone and asked me to wait for the sheriff deputies to get there as I need to give them any information on him. After they confirmed that he was gone , I reached out to his son, but he never responded and the deputies reached out to the sheriff's department in his son's home. I ended up having to stay for a few hours, giving them information and then they asked me to set up where to take the body. So, since we just set up for a family member who will be removed from a ventilator the end of the week, I had one in my phone.

Sorry for your loss, Byron. Glad he had a friend like you. And sorry you had to see that. Yes, it is disturbing.

This is a tough one Byron.
Take care of yourself as has been said. Not much more to add but it sounds like you did all you could for him while he was here.

Teddy was doing his best to get everything in order. I remember Dad, before his 93rd birthday saying he was ready to go. It was jarring to me at the time, but as we get older we understand.
I suspect Teddy's passing was quick and being there earlier would have made no difference. It was time. You did and are doing what you could for your friend. I just hope the son isn't a PITA to deal with. If so, just step back. You were closer to Teddy than he. Best Les
