Mustang attractant

Went to meet some friends for lunch today with my Carrera. It was a 30 mile round-trip and the weather was perfect.
Half-way there, a mustang appears on my rear...I'm going 60 on a 55 road. He is about 3 car lengths behind and doesn't pass. No on-coming traffic. He finally passes after about five miles.

The same thing happened on the way back. A different mustang follows right on my tail for a couple miles and then finally floors it and passes. I'm sure he was doing over 100 before he was past me a ways.

Both times the mustangs drivers looked real young.
Why do they do that? Do they like the smell of my exhaust?

A pic of my car...

They think you have beer.

fintstone 08-19-2023 01:15 PM

They think your car will go zero to 100 in 5 seconds...and figure the only reason you are going so slow is because you know about a speed trap that they do not. After a while they figure out that you just "drive like an old man."

John Rogers 08-19-2023 01:17 PM

Back in the day when my late wife had the 1987 Turbo (not quite stock) she would run errands to get groceries or stuff in the 930 and almost always a young fellow in a Mustang or even a motorcycle would want to see if this senior lady know how to drive! Those were some silly guys for sure, mainly as she had been through our SDR driving school and learned to NEVER race from a standing start, but get up to 30MPH of so then make sure boost was up then go like hell!

rwest 08-19-2023 01:18 PM

Maybe you got a nice butt?

Probably hoping to get you to initiate a race. I always loved when someone comes up next to me and does the engine revving, speed up and drop back move to try and get me to race... and there is another car right in front of one or both of us, huh what do you think, that I’m going to floor it into the traffic in front of me?. I just ignore them anyways- both me and my car are too old to race.

Probably close to the truth. For what it's worth, I've had the same thing happen to me when driving my Bullitt model Mustang. I figure the driver of the other car may be looking for a bit of romping, but moves on after figuring out it's not going to happen. Not just Mustangs tho, other makes as well.

stevej37 08-19-2023 01:25 PM

There is no way I'm racing someone in a Mustang that I don't know.
Especially when I don't know where the cops are and I'll prob lose.:)

way back when I was 1st dating Diana, (99) she told she was thinking about buying a new mustang. As were driving up 17, I explain to her how typical mustang drivers acted, trying to race, reving the engine, ect .
She laughed, and less than a minute later, here comes a mustang, reving his engine and acting like he wanted to race, I laughed and ignored him. A bit farther down the road, here is another one, doing the same thing, but this time, I am on the on ramp, and tell her, hold on, and I punch the 911 and of course it is hugging the ramp as we get on the highway, I am watching the mirror and see the mustang almost hit a:eek: RV before spinning off the road.
The  :mad:SC I was driving

On the way back I did...in my stomach. I also had a box with half a sandwich and fries that I couldn't eat. I should have started flicking fries out the roof at him. :D

Byron...I think your seats are the same as mine...Recaro Speed I think they are called.
Heavily bolstered...I love them.

Around here it's $90k 3/4 ton diesel Fords and Chevys rolling coal over their insta handle stickers.

ICE, Molson ice. Molson Zoo is only available with a notarized form saying you have a bunch of exotic animals.

They have no shame in being thoroughly embarrassed by cars waaay less expensive, devoid of stickers, flags, with rolling stock and fuel filters entirely contained within bodywork. No local has the money or insight to make a truly fast diesel p/u but they all think they do.

I read the thread title and my first thought was:

Minimum of three people standing in a parking lot with coffee in their hands.

Steve Carlton 08-19-2023 02:52 PM

Mustang goes by sideways at 60mph and misses the people by inches, then crashes into the Burger King.

masraum 08-19-2023 04:13 PM

Many folks tailgate these days. It's super common. And if they want to go faster than you're going, they tailgate worse to try to push you.

HardDrive 08-19-2023 04:20 PM

No way would I race anyone today. Some dumb kid dies, and you catch a case for vehicular manslaughter. Not to mention the civil exposure. No thanks.

But tailgating for miles when there is open road ahead with no on-coming cars?

Rusty Heap 08-19-2023 04:30 PM

I think the biggest magnet attractant to Mustangs are Power Poles leaving a car meet....:D

At least the first guy was 3 car lengths behind as opposed to 10 feet.

stevej37 08-19-2023 04:55 PM

^^^ It was prob closer to two lengths...I could see his face clearly in my rear-view mirror.

I pulled up to red light next to a couple young guys in a foxbody one Saturday night. It was my wife and I in my Cayenne Turbo. I don't know what engine they had (maybe a six cylinder even) ...but they started revving their engine and looking over at me. They may have not known I had the turbo model (or even what my car was). I did not look back, but when the light changed, I let them take off (burning rubber), and then gave mine about 3/4 throttle. Of course, the all-wheel drive hooked right up with no spin. I passed them like they were sitting still. When they got to the next light, the driver looked over all sheepish and exclaimed that he did not realize how fast "those" were. It probably added insult to injury when the trailer I was pulling with my '74 911 on it also passed them (lightweight aluminum Trailex). My wife never even realized I was racing (sort of racing).

These clowns should have their license permanently pulled. A holes. Also, another diesel clown.

Idiots.

greglepore 08-19-2023 05:40 PM

Tailgaters are just a problem. I live in an area with narrow roads, just 2 f350s wide barely, if one of us puts half a tire in the weeds, and no shoulders. Doesn't matter if I'm in the 911 doing 60, which is way too fast, or on the Duc, or in the truck, I've got some asshat in a beat Nissan pickup on my tail, crossing the yellow then tires in the dirt, generally expressing his frustration. Its stupid.
And the last time I wailed around one of these blind corners, torching the apex and generally having fun, I found a landscaper blocking all the road backing his trailer into a property. Luckily the ditch wasn't deep...
Never mind that the missus got passed on the LEFT while at a t stop sign because she didn't move fast enough. She was turning left and didn't kill said asshat, too bad for darwin.
Its not the 911, cause the jerks don't understand that a modern Honda has more HP.

I don't get it either.

Hell, I've seen 'em do it on multi-lane highways/interstates. I've seen where some numbnuts is in a center lane or the left lane, and another numbnut comes up behind the first guy, and instead of going around, they'll tailgate at <1 car length for 5 miles. If it happens to me (in the center lane, I'll kick off the cruise and let my car slow down until they go around. If I'm in the left lane, I move over before they get there or as soon as possible.

GENIUS! Meh, I don't know about "A holes" (assuming they get approval from the property owner before hand), but they are certainly dumbarses.

^^^ With the adaptive cruise on my Civic....I could do the same by setting the distance to the min.
I don't see the benefit of doing it. I usually go by my old drivers training and follow at least a car length for every 10mph.

My adaptive cruise sometimes surprises me. If I have it on and it slows the car down for traffic ahead....it will stay the same distance behind until I move into an open lane. When the shift is made...the car rockets ahead until the cruise makes it stay at the speed set.

The rocketing ahead always catches me off guard.

I go by the newer standard which is 2 seconds (under normal circumstances, 3 or 4 under less ideal circumstances).

Yep, that's how the cruise in the wife's Outback works. Slow down when you come up behind someone, and then accelerate when the space in front of you is no longer "blocked". I like it under most circumstances. I wish it would slow down a bit more gradually, but it's OK for a relatively simple system. It's the first cruise system that I've ever seen that will engage from a dead stop. I can be at a stop, let off of the brakes, and hit "resume" and the car will take off and get up to speed. Another cool feature is that if I hit resume and come to a corner, the car will stop accelerating until I straighten the steering wheel.

I think intentionally ruining things that a lot of people will never be able to afford just for the sake of clicks, sensationalism and money earns the AHole tile. It’s not much different than the moron who crashed his plane faking an engine failure while filming it.

masraum 08-19-2023 07:00 PM

I don't think they planned to intentionally destroy the cars. My guess is that they figured it would be about as bad as doing a few donuts. I don't think they had planned to burn the cars to the ground or do any permanent damage. I suspect they figured "drive it around in a field, then pay someone to clean and detail it, and we're good to go."

Most folks wouldn't have a clue about that. Those guys probably know very little about how cars work. I've seen cops start roadside fires with police cars, and you'd think they'd know.
