				Where does your city rank?

I'm not surprised Boston is ranked 2nd but the percentages of a few others is shocking.

Boston ranked one of America's safest cities

I don't live in the city of San Diego, but in the county. It's one of the larger cities (& second largest in CA) in the country and isn't ranked. I don't think it's lower than LA, Chicago, or Detroit, etc. I wonder why it's not on the list.

?Any safe city list that has 'Nawlins near the top is suspect imo.... at 12 noon, or at 12 midnight ... it matters. Lots of places are safe during the day ... and your life is at risk after dark if you are clueless and in the wrong place. |

Sacramento is not there either, which is bigger than San Francisco. These charts mean nothing. There is a whole valley of crime a 3rd the size of CA.

I would send an email to Gallup and see what they say about how they chose the cities Marv. Might be interesting.

It seems like a weird list. They asked folks in 16 different cities, and they spoke to just over 1000 people, so about 64 folks per city.

IMO, that's not enough people to be confident in the results.

I thought it was a small sample as well Steve but checking it out, it's not people in each city, it's 1000 people all over the U.S (which is still a small sample IMHO). It's just a perception survey. Here's the methodology, I thought it was an interesting survey that, if anything, could spark serious analysis:

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted July 3-27, 2023, with a random sample of 1,015 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Each city was rated by a random half-sample of approximately 500 adults. For results based on these samples of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 80% cellphone respondents and 20% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

WTF?!?

"Hawaii, Texas?" I can only assume someone farked up and might have meant "Houston, Texas" but it could have been anything. ![]() I was wondering how they were ranking them (violent crimes or violent crimes / population or something else), then I noticed that the "##,### violent events" wasn't necessarily increasing, so I'm guessing it must be violent crimes per 100,000 or something like that. It was weird/interesting that the top 2 are St Louis and Memphis, and Detroit didn't make the list at all. When I see lists like this, I wonder "how was the data compiled in such a way as to create the list that it did?" Because the person compiling the data can change details in ways to make the list very different. It's kind of like how every truck commercial says "most powerful" or "most fuel efficient". "Most powerful" (HP or torque) or maybe "most powerful in it's class" or "most powerful standard" (as opposed to optional engines) etc....

I'm surprised Willoughby isn't listed. I always get off at that train stop.
