Preece flips 10 (11?) times at Daytona

When things go pear-shaped at 200...
I've never seen a car just keep going like this.

Violent. They took him to the hospital. I hope he is not badly injured.

Watched the race...he stood briefly after out of the car, then he was placed on a stretcher and taken to the care center. I took that as a good sign...

That's about as bad as you're gonna see (past or present) and extremely rare these daze. Those cars getting airborne, flipping, rolling, etc. used to be quite common back in the 80's/90's.

The stability of these cars now is unbelievable .... 3 wide, inches apart, lap after lap at 190 mph ..... wasn't possible years ago .... but... when it happens .

That was a horrific crash... now or then.

Then he would likely not have survived ...

I bet he is as sore as hell today ! Getting whipped about like that, even though he was strapped in hurts. When I had my "Big One" I wound up sore as I thought possible. Went to urgent care a couple days later. The result..5 broken ribs and 2 fractured vertebrae. Thank goodness for the safety equipment !

Simon Pagenaud walked and waved after he violently rolled at Mid Ohio this year, and has been out 2 months with post concussion stuff...

Ryan Blaney took a hell of a hit, more so than some of those that were fatal due to a basal skull fracture. The in car camera showed his head snapping so hard that I have a hard time believing that anyone can kill another by snapping their neck. If Blaney survived that the HANS device has come a long way.

The real time footage of Presee was absolutely incredible. I've seen a lot of barrel rolls since NASCAR came on TV. I think the velocity of that one is the worst. The thing that saved Preece was that he spent so much time airborne and only hit hard a couple times. I doubt he remembers.

^^^^ Blaney's hit would have killed him 25 years ago imo.

The biggest items that stand out ... safety wise... all contributing these days... in no particular order:

The absorbing "safety walls".
The HANS system.
The "flaps" that keep cars from getting airborne (most of the time).

The Blaney crash looked worse. It looked similar to Dale Sr's crash in 2001. As KC911 mentioned safety has improved.
