Paint or powder coat chrome

My NTM Harley has a lot of chrome on it. A LOT. I want to gloss black a few pieces like the air filter and horn covers. I can buy them blacked out for $140 or have a shop do it.

I don't yet have prices for the work but figured someone here (Shaun?) could tell me if having it done at a shop is worth it or just drop the $140.

Opinions?

TIA

I can’t get even a bike frame powder coated for less than $150.

I think buy the pieces for $140, have the original chrome pieces to change back or sell.

It's very difficult to paint ( professionally) over chrome, get it to look good. Swapping parts already finished in what you want is the best way to go for small stuff.

$140 is a bargain for new and you can sell your chrome.

You can sell or keep the OG chrome stuff

You do not want to try painting chrome, not even a little bit.

Wait, it is possible to buy something for a Harley and have it cost under $100?

Paint chrome? What are you thinking?

There is a finish used on some vintage Italian bikes called “chromovelato”, which is translucent thinned lacquer sprayed over chrome. It looks cool as hell. Not very durable but maybe those aren’t high wear pieces. You could try a chromovelato finish with black lacquer. If you don’t like it, you can just strip off the lacquer.

It's easy to paint over chrome, just media blast at low PSI so you don't burn all the way through the nickel and copper and you have an excellent finish for paint. Or Cerakote.

It's easy enough but looks like hell when it chips. And everyone knows just what they are looking at.
I'm sure Shaun's work is not prone to chipping, but for the rest of us....

Well I went and ordered the parts because...sadly I am like Biden. Never under estimate my ability to screw something up.

Thanks fellas.
