Calling upon the Brain Trust - "factory" locking lug nuts or aftermarket.
 

So what is the story on locking lug nuts.

I have 2 porsches, and the 996 has a flat tire.

So I bought a set of "porsche master key set" sockets to pull the locking lug nut.

BUT HERE IS WHERE I MAY BE SCREWED. on my 996 C4S, with the blown out tire, this is what I'm looking at, with no key with the car.............

are all porsche locking lug nuts splined?, and am I looking at an aftermarket key lock?

I'm screwed if it's custom, I have factory rims! :confused:

please don't suggest pounding a socket upon them. I'm not a caveman.

I'm 99% certain that what you have on your 996 is factory.

When I was looking around the other day, I discovered what you did (wasn't there just a thread about this that you posted recently, a week or two ago?).

9x7 series use the splined style (my boxster has those too), but the 9x6 use a different style of "locks".

My wife's 2017 Macan came with factory delivered locking nuts. She went on the Porsche web site, and "built her car" and we had the local dealership order it, and we picked it up a few months later.

Only the dealership had serviced it. One day se said her tire pressure was low, and I put my gauge on it, and yep a flat. I found a nail in the center of the tread. OK, I put it on my scissor lift and started to remove the tire. The lug nuts are torqued to 135 pound feet! My impact zipped of the first two nuts and then I discovered the locking nut. I looked in the back where the key is supposed to be, and it was an empty hole.

Some dealer mechanic either forgot too put it back, or he stole it. I had to put the two lugs back on, and drive to the dealer to have them figure out what key it was of the set. The set was missing one key, and of course that was it. They went to the mechanics and found one, and charged me 45 bucks for what well may have been our key in the first place.

I got the tire off, and the flat fixed. I looked at the rather short lug wrench that is in the factory tool kit, and said screw that. I ordered a 1/2 inch drive socket, and longer handled wrench and stuck them in the car. I also bought a motorcycle tire plug kit. The ones for motorcycles are a handy small kit in a bag and the car sets are mostly huge.

I was just lucky our dealership is just two miles from our house. I was pissed the key that was delivered with the car was swiped. Now if it goes back, that key comes out first.

I do oil changes on it, but I don't want to get into PDK transmission fluid changes. The Macan has been flawless so just maintenance has been done. And two factory recalls that were of course free.

Or put it someplace obvious, like in a ziploc back in the passenger's seat, and make sure it's there when you pick up the car.

well crap, sounds like a tow to the dealer if I can't pull the wheel at home...........:(

I'm sure there's a way around that. A quick check on eBay and I came up on a set for $50. I didn't even go down the full list. What is the dealer going to charge to find the right one?

At the least I'd plug the tire and drive it.

Another thought is to trace the inner on paper of make a quick impression with clay or silicone.

Thanks Zeke, the 996 C4S has REALLy deep lug nut hole reaching too far for an imprint, but great idea.

I finally swapped out my 993 style locking lug bolts with standard nuts from our host. Nobody really steals wheels anymore, at least in the places I go to.

Every new car I buy the first thing I do is take off all the locking nuts and toss them. Too many instances where the "key" failed on the side of the road. If the wheels get stolen the insurance agent gets a call. Hasn't happened yet.

And with a puncture in the middle of the tread, it should be possible (probably a PITA) to plug the hole with the wheel on the car. I've had/driven plenty of cars with the old style gooey rope plugs in them over the years, even sports cars. I've only ever had one issue where I had a slow leak through the plug itself (this was back in the 90s).

Wheel lock nuts/bolts are basically worthless . They slow down the vehicle owner more than a thief . Thieves have a full compliment of the right tools . And if not they just steal the car . Get rid of them and never look back .
