Left lane camaros

I don't stay in the left lane very long....especially if I see one of these in my rear-view mirror.

This one is so fast that it might be hard to get out of the way fast enough. I think it's known as Big Red Camaro

At Pikes Peak.

Big Red won the Silver State Classic covering the 94-mile blast in just 27 minutes, 54 seconds with an average speed of 197.99 mph. RJ was just 19 years old and to maintain that average he maxed out at 222 mph.

a fuel fitting vibrated loose and Big Red caught fire. Big was gutted and any plans had to be shelved while the car was rebuilt, yet again. By April 2017 the car was ready and ran the Mojave Mile where it broke its own 251 mph-record with a 253.7 mph run.

RJ’s fastest ever run in Big Red was 266.2 mph at the Mojave 1.5 Mile early in 2018

I was going to say you wouldn’t have to worry because the car would likely run out gas before it caught up to you, then I saw this.

The first time I heard of Big Red was back in the early 90s, I think. I remember reading about it participating in the Silver State Classic. Insane to imagine in a 1st gen camaro, but clearly, not much of it is or functions like original camaro parts other than the body.

1st gen or not, nearly 200mph for 100 miles is nuts!

Yeay Camaro thread, post your Camaro photos.
Big Red does it all.
Had fun chasing him at Big Willow last year.
Qualified .10 of a second behind Big Red with my 10 Camaro.

As much as I enjoy the 10 the 5 is faster.

There is a players cup car for sale locally. My inner 16 year old says I need to buy it.

Not this same car…

Yep, for pretty much any car, avg 200mph for nearly 100miles is crazy.

That's very, very cool! I'd have been like a kid seeing their favorite rock star. I guess I first heard about Big Red in 1989 or 1990 via an article about their Silver State performance.

For me at that age when I was still really into classic American cars, but also loved the idea of a sports car, that was the ultimate. A classic car that was fast AND could turn and stop. It still is. If I could hook one up these days (maybe a bit lower limits than Big Red), I certainly would.

Thank you. Most don't realize it's a hybrid. It burns gas and rubber.

True, a stock '69 ran the quarter in 13.2.
The 2013 does it in 11.9.
But wait, the 2013 also has ac, cruise, power everything, and runs a race track with ablomb.

The '69 was something, but given 44 years of progress, the 2013 ZL1 was something else.
🙂

They didn't get enough traction stock in 1969. With slicks, headers, and tuning they were into the mid-11s. They were also normally aspirated and carbureted 7 liter motors vs supercharged 6.2 liter motors. I think 2013 ZL1s were in the low to high 12s.

Anyway, I'm sure you know, but I wanted to mention that the ZL1 name is legendary and storied. I was just pointing out the legacy, not looking for comparisons or arguments.
