It says it has the flat top SU carburetors. I thought those were the Strombergs on the 73’s.

I had a blue 73Z and installed the SU carbs on it.

Datsun 240Zs never came with Strombergs

Their carbs were all made by Hitachi under license from SU.

'73 and '74 had the flat top SUs which were less desirable than the '70-'72 round top SUs. Many owners either retrofitted the flat tops with round tops.

There was a really sharp full resto '70 240Z that sold yesterday for $165k on BaT. Goes to show that really exceptional cars are still commanding the big premiums.

The days ('80s through early 2000s) when these cars could be had for $5k and less are now long gone.

One of the local Datsun gurus lives in OKC area. He has a really nice 240Z with a 350 HP 280Z massaged engine, and a very well done chassis. He had it at the last SEMA. His wife's car is a Datsun B210 that looks great, and both cars are fast at our autocross. His 240 is a very early model, and he has the Fairlady badge on the rear, not 240Z.

Usually at the autocross, I have the oldest car by far, but his are way older still, but not even remotely stock by any measure.

He does all the work on the cars. Body work, paint, and all the mechanical. Very well done.

Z's have always been a favorite of mine since hs when I used to swap my new CJ5 with a friend's new '78 280 ... I trusted her with my Jeep and she with her Z .....

But damn if I wasn't tempted to break her trust ...

Never did .

There was an awesome '73 240 in the parking lot back then too ... being young and stoopid, I thought newer was better

Drool....

I suffered through both of those, and while the round tops can be set up to run quite well, they still suck.

Flat tops are hopeless and ought to sacrificed to the gods of lousy engineering at the pit of the nearest active volcano.

I only got satisfaction by converting to Weber DCOE 40mm.....and it transformed the car albeit at somewhat lower fuel economy

My first Z was a 74 with the flat top carbs. Back in '89 there wasn't the wealth of info that the internet offers so I had no clue that the earlier carbs would solve the vapor locking which was the problem with my car. Horrendous vapor locking any time the temps got above 75 degrees. The car was unreliable, had rusty floorpans, would strand you in a heartbeat and I loved it. Currently have a '71 and and a 73. 71 is getting restored in between jobs. Hopefully I'll get to the 73 as well before I kick the bucket.

Been watching all of the Z auctions. My 77 was pretty much the current blue 77 auction with the exception of the wheels. I had the optional alum wheels in mine. Miss that car. Had a ‘72 as well but, it was a complete bastard. Really want another ‘72…

My 74 Porsche 914 2.0 ran fine on the fuels of the day for the first two years. Then the vapor locking started. The fuel pump was factory located right under the battery, next to the heater box air outlet if the heater was no on. I had to move the fuel pump to under the gas tank, and then all was fine, never a vapor lock again. In 75 I believe, the factory delivered the 914s with the fuel pump under the gas tank.

No sale.

Bid to $145k.

That car is just amazing, but I’d probably ruin it….cuz I’d want to drive it.

Almost pulled the trigger on a ‘78 280Z about a year ago.

Solid car, not hacked up, driven fairly regularly and looked tight. Was in CL in Tucson for 9k.

^^^ Wow, and no sale at that price???? My sister had a 280ZX once, it was a nice car, it was an automatic though and I preferred my TR6, lol.

^^^

Cool color and looks like a solid car. I think it will hammer under $20K, maybe, and that makes it a great buy.

I put together this little video of a wicked built 260z with a lumpy V8 in it.

Ohhh, that's a nice one.

I hope my friend Ian Reid doesn't see that. He's got enough Z cars already.

His 240Z was a gorgeous orange one.

This was my '72 240Z I had when in college. It had some rust and needed some TLC after I beat on it during those years. I did not have the money, time, place or skills back then to make it nice again. I loved that car and really really really wish I had kept it.

I wish I still had my 73 240Z. I learned a lot and it was a great car.

A couple of pictures. The first one is where some goober cut through stopped traffic and hit me. That was an easy fix.

Second picture is me stripping it down to get repainted. I probably lost a little lung function doing that without a mask. Note the Z in the background.

Last picture are when I stripped down my 75 TR6.

My 80-year old neighbor stores his 240Z that he bought brand new in my garage. He no longer drives it, so I exercise it as often as possible. I love driving it.

My father bought a red 280Z 2+2 new in 1976. At the time I was quite sure he'd pass any day from old age, and the car would be mine. Now I look back and chuckle at myself. At 16 I was too young and dumb to realize 55 wasn't decrepit old age.

In 1998 I found I needed a cheap car, so I bought a '82 Z for $600. Not only did it turn out to be a fun car, I also learned cars that are paid for are the best.

This was my '72 that I've posted on the forum before. Bought it in 80 and drove it through college and held it for another 5 or 6 years after. I regret selling it of course!
