Door dash testing extorting tips from customers

'If you don't tip up front, we can't be sure how long it will be before you get your order'

The mafia calls it "protection". If you don't pay up, your business may get attacked but who knows...

It also means if you tip up front you have no way to reflect if your order is cold or damaged from something sitting on tip of it. Um, no. Tip is for when you get good service and your order is correct.

If the delivery people need extortion to get tips and make good money then maybe they need to find a better job.

There are so many products and brands I want to boycott. But I don't use them anyway, so I can't. Food delivery is another of them.

Obviously, in this case, this isn't true. The tip entices a courier to bring you the food and nothing more.

Personally, I'd go get the food myself and skip the drama and uncertainty. But I don't live in NYC or San Fran, so maybe I don't appreciate the value DoorDash adds.

My son door dashes during college break. He's very particular about restaurants, delivery location and the tip amount before he'll accept an order. He makes $30-$40/hour. As far as I can tell its not door dash thats 'forcing' the tips, just they are explaining the reality that only idiots will take your order if they can't make enough on the delivery. Market rate baby. You can go ahead and order but it might take a while to receive it if you aren't willing to pay for the privilege.

Surely, there has to be a rating system for the drivers to view the customers who tip well, poorly or not at all. Maybe it's never made viewable to the customers, but I'd think it has to exist.

I'll ask a Door Dash Driver. I have 3 co-workers who will literally Door Dash cups of coffee and trivial stuff- I can't believe it.

I discovered that Uber drivers will play stupid and be unable to find you and cancel your ride after being at your (wrong) location for a few minutes. My understanding is they get paid at a certain point of time. Super annoying.

Drive with a DoorDasher and see how often extortion discussions arise.

WTF is wrong with some of you ..

I use Uber Eats on occasion .. you place the order, then checkout..

At the end a screen pops up for suggested tips.. I always give a tip

The driver gets the tip.... I know that the few bucks I tip is guaranteeing my order gets to me...

Before the internet, we ordered Pizza via phone...when the delivery guy came you slipped him or her few bucks.. Is this fundamentally different?

Up front vs on arrival is totally different.
Do you tip your waiter before you get service too?

Also, most of these services skim the tip to the actual person providing the last step. I remember having this discussion with a younger coworker that did Uber part time. There were 'ways' that both Uber and the drivers each played each other and the customer. One example: if the driver picked up someone(s) after a night bar hopping, and subsequently 'barfed' in the car on the ride home, that person would be charged $300 cleaning fee on top of the rate for the ride. Uber kept 2/3's of that..............

Yes!
I delivered pizza in my college days. A pie that is ice cold or looks like it was bounced around and is a mess doesn't deserve a tip. If people tip when they order the late, botched delivery still gets reward for what should have been done right.

It's not a tip, it's delivery enticement money.

You have made your point and other's have countered but you remain steadfast to the same argument. It does not work like you are saying it does.

Do customers see their food and make a decision as to timeliness and quality, absolutely. The driver is long gone at this point. Driver and customer seldom see each other. The customer has to act in a fair manner but is subject to human nature. They will (often) cheat the driver because they can get away with it - cheat like a boss.

A delivered pizza tip is face to face. Human nature is involved again but in reverse. Face to face protocol is involved.

I did ask my DD friend if she can see a rating on customers. No response yet.

Customers are often not beautiful people. However, I was DD driving my friend around later evening in my mini-van with new tires in a snow storm as her car would not go. A customer gave her a $100 cash tip for braving the storm as no one else was out driving.

I can envision some customer push-back in the future.
Food doesn't arrive in X minutes and it gets cancelled...and a charge-back on the C/C...which costs DD money.
The customer gets banned but they're already pissed and don't care.
Friends can order, or they off the butt and go pick it up from the restaurant, or stock the freezer.

Eat food from a sketchy source? Ummm no.

I stopped ordering the occasional from a pizza place a few blocks away after it took an hour. Driver was baked.
I could have driven across town and cooked the thing in that time.

That's sucks. I've heard so many BS stories about uber that I'd likely call a real taxi. I don't know how eff'ed up they are, but I would hope for something better than greed and cheating.

The market will sort it out. Some company will come along and guarantee good service and Uber will regret their lack of vision.

The sit down restaurant analogy doesn't apply, with Door Dash, or Uber Eats, you never see the driver, They drop the food off, take a picture of it by your door, and text it to you that your food has arrived... I have a Wyze doorbell, so I know the instant the food is dropped off.. I never interact with the driver..

Uber Eats', Door Dash are a different model from traditional sit down or delivery..

A really good pizza place near me did away with its own delivery driver in favor of Uber, and door dash..

If you didn't tip a pizza delivery guy ( the way it was done years ago)... what are the chances if you ordered there again that your order would be delayed or ignored...

Maybe Uber and Door Dash should call it a delivery incentive as mentioned earlier..

Even with Uber and Door Dash, do you think your order will get priority if the driver sees zero tip?

A few years ago my F250 PSD was at the dealer, because the smoke came out of one of the computers

I called a real taxi/yellow cab company to go pick it up...My truck was about 12 miles away...The dispatcher told me they couldn't pick me up for an hour, and the ride cost $25.....

After I hung up.. I installed the Uber app...set it up, and requested a ride... $12 and 10 minutes later I was on my way to get my truck
When you request an Uber ride... you see all the drivers nearby on the app...There are usually quite a few near me..

Eff waiting an hour for an overpriced ride...Screw the traditional taxi companies.

Oh and with Uber rides, the tip suggestion comes after you are dropped off.....

in the maybe dozen times I've used Uber for rides, the cars were immaculately clean, newer cars.. Some of the drivers were quite interesting while making small talk...

Compared to traditional taxis... clapped out Chevy Capris or Crown Vics...

Vinyl seats with unidentified stains and spooge on the seats...
