Hoarding and the hoarding hoarders who hoard boards
Yeah, this is a problem with wood butchers. I can hardly leave any workable piece of wood in the alley tossed by others. I mean I keep a couple drawers full of just sticks for propping up something, use as clamping cauls or maybe s little fill in on some project.
Got a rack for dimensional lumber and a crate for shorts. I have a pile of large chunks that used to end under cars as cribbing. I mean 6 x 10's and 12's. I have an anvil sitting on an upright glue lam. That thing must be 8 x 14. Then there's the plywood. Helps to have all kinds of different species and figuring too. You can't have too much wood, can you? |

I caan't bring myself to toss any dimensional scrap more than 6 inches long. Wire and pieces of rebar also find extended residence in my basement.

Oh yeah. With the price of wood these days, I definitely hoard the board, and I've got examples of this sickness stashed everywhere around my house because I don't have room for a dedicated stash rack.

There were about 30 board/ft of 4x10's in a construction-site slash pile. I asked, got a yes, dragged them home and pulled about a thousand nails out before I milled them down and bolted them together into a little bench. (which needs a fresh squirt of CWF, as we can all see). I didn't need a bench, but that much lumber going to waste wasn't going to happen in my neighborhood.

I am a certified wood butcher. I have several pieces of wood hanging from the ceiling in my garage. I don't do much woodworking because I suck at it. I still have the scraps of 2x4 under my workbench to use as place to drill holes through something and into the wood. Or to bash against when putting edging on the many flowerbeds my wife has.
I have one nice piece of 4x4 that was in my dad's garage and I was not going to just leave it there when we sold the place.

I'm a hardwood flooring contractor so yes, I have scraps aplenty on a consistent basis. Exotic boards from the rain forest and of every specie in the US, all select, processed and expensive. It goes into a stack which eventually gets whacked into chunks and burned in my fireplace. I call it designer firewood

![]() ![]() I actually do use some scraps every now and then for this and that. This is some scrap Tiger wood that escaped the fate of the fireplace. Straight out of the Amazonian jungle, probably about $40 worth. I threw a little blower stand together today for the shop just so I don't have to bend over so far to pick it up |

As it turns out I've got two friends who hoard boards. One guy has about 30 surfboards, mainly collectables. I was telling another friend who said "Actually..." and showed me a pic of about 20 in his garage. I've only got five, I'm not keeping up.
Boards, as in boards, I've got 4 big structural beam boards, and lots of little unimportant ones. |
