I like to hear the Maori accent - watching some NZ based shows

I've seen the Thor movies with the rock man and his accent. I don't know what it is, but there's something about his accent that is very easy and pleasant to hear.

The missus like's mysteries, so we've watched "My Life is Murder" which stars Lucy Lawless. It started out in Aus but then moved to NZ. I don't remember hearing the Maori accent in that one, but I'm sure that I did. But now we're watching "Brokenwood" which is a mystery series based in a small NZ town and features Maori quite a bit, now especially in the last couple of seasons that we've watched. It's watching this show that I realized that I believe the accent that I like is particular to Maori when they are speaking English. It's cool.

Jared from Brokenwood

I love the Maori's and their culture. There are lots of them living in Aus now and they're generally hard working & family oriented but unlike Bill I haven't had a lot to do with them personally. They're polar opposite of Indigenous Australians. Our Aboriginals love their families and all that but their culture is very different to that of the Maori.

IMO Anyone who hits their significant other(s) is a coward & this guy was no exception. I can't say much more than that without pushing this into PARF but the neighbors wife and kids would often turn up at my front door looking for sanctuary. The story gets really long from here.

I don't really know, but I'd expect Maori to maybe be more like the Samoan culture.

That's unfortunate. Low-life dirt bags exist in every group. Being in the US, I don't really have any exposure to the Maori or their culture or any understanding of their interaction with the European-based NZ folks.

I can only assume that relations aren't perfect/great between what were natives and the folks that came from other places and colonized.

No, Samoans are great people. Lots in NZ but I've been to Samoa and loved it. One of my very best friends is a Kiwi born Samoan.

As an American on vacation in NZ as I type, I will confess I have zero idea what a Māori accent sounds like.

I have seen some Māori people. Saw some exhibits in the big Museum in Wellington, but am essentially clueless.

A timely post for me.

Yes thank you. I've read the posts about your step sister... But I really don't want to go PARF in OT.

IMO Indigenous Australians in general are "improving".

To be clear this is the only time I've had an issues with anyone from new Zealand. The guy was a thug and a bully. He ran a security company that supplied security guards for the local mall. He was big, very imposing and he liked "practicing" his martial arts skills on the front lawn of his house.

The coward part... And why I think he was one: When his wife came to my house with their children seeking refuge he'd never even approached the property. She did this on several occasions and his wife and two kids would end up spending the night (what do you think was going through his head knowing his wife and kids were sleeping in someone else's house?). And I'd often cook them breakfast in the morning. Not once did he talk to me about what was going. He'd act like nothing was wrong and say hi the next time I saw him.

Sounds like a real piece of sheiße. It sucks to run into folks like that, but at least you were there to help his family when needed.

Thanks... I'll never forget the look on her face as I opened my front door. It was always the same. Absolute desperation. It soon got to a point were I wouldn't say a word. I'd just step aside and let her & her boys into my home.

Yes it sucks but you can't choose your neighbors. The only thing you can do is not show fear and do not do anything to appease them (IMO appeasement at the wrong time can make you look weak).

To this day I still can't listen to Rap music without think about this arsehole.

But yea I do love the Kiwi/Maori accent... Especially when it's a woman speaking!
