Im fascinated by the hood .
Dont know why, always have been. This short video is the basic area where we had our rentals. We stuck to nicer quieter streets , but some places in this vid are just a few blocks away from our places .
There were some beautiful old houses in the area at one time, and parts of it are coming back strong . It was fun while it lasted, we made our $ and got the heck out of compton . No more cleanig up needles, fixing bullet holes in front doors , getting stiffed on rents from junkies, evictions, sawed off shotguns etc. Spent every winter weekend in these neighborhoods for 15 some years fixing up dilapitdated old houses . I learned a lot . Show me the worst areas around you !!!

On our last trip back from French Lick, IN we were just going along fine on I-44 and my GPS said rerouting, I-44 is closed ahead. We were in the middle of St Louis. It took us into to some very scary neighborhoods. Burned out cars, lots of groups of people standing around in groups at random. Burned down buildings and houses.
I was really happy to get back to civilization. Every GPS needs a button for keep me out of the ghetto! I would be happy to drive an extra 10 miles or more to avoid that again. And the GPS was of course correct, they had closed I-44 for a bridge project.

I don't ever want to tour it again.
One other trip east I was in Memphis, and I saw a large gas station sign and took an exit off the interstate for gas and a pee stop. It exited off right into the hood. I saw a cop car in the parking lot, and the convenience store said the bathrooms are out of order. I ain't sticking around for gas, and expected to see an on-ramp nearby. Once again I was in the ghetto and had to go a mile to get back on the interstate. I still needed to pee, but I waited until I was out of town and could see the gas station was indeed a large Love's and I finally got gas and relief.

This reminds me of a trip I took as a kid. Dad's mom was in town and we thought it might be nice to go to TJ for some sight seeing. This is real early '60's.
We drive down, cross the border and Dad wants to go to Rosarita Beach I think it was. We get lost in TJ, end up out by the bull ring. Some of the poverty we saw made an impression on me I'll never forget. I've never wanted to go to Mexico again. That trip and the train ride going into Houston and seeing some of that area from the train really made me appreciate growing up in Santa Monica all the more.

Why is it when you get lost, you always end up in the ghetto?

I'll be honest that looks pretty nice compared to areas I've seen in many big cities.

I cussed my iPhone, and dug out my GPS from the back seat area, and hooked it up, and it took me to the right place. Later I double checked every bit of the address, and the phone map was just confused as I had everything entered correctly.

Got lost in Savannah GA once. No different than 1/3 of Long Beach, the 5th poorest city in CA with a pop over 100K. That's why I refer to LB as the sewer by the sea.
That video would be considered racist around here. |

Crips & Bloods:
I got off the 105 freeway on Crenshaw blvd. to get some gas. I was coming home from work and I was wearing my Boeing blue jacket. I'm looking around the gas station while pumping my gas and I'm getting serious "mad dog" looks from the guys around me. One guy approached me dressed up in red clothes and shoes and asked "are you crazy, why are you flying Crip colors at the Bloods favorite gas station? I quit pumping my gas and went across the street to the other gas station where everyone was wearing blue. In SoCal is called "La vida loco" (living the crazy life) Always were grey in the hood

Our first house, we are working on it , maybe 3 weeks in . We come in one morning to find we have been broken into . They stole some hand tools , but vandalized the place pretty good . They threw 2 5 gallon buckets of paint all over the walls, broke through some walls, doors and windows , but they spray painted "CK" all over the walls . We call the police and a really cute female officer comes out to file the report . We are chit chatting, and I casually ask her what is the deal with the Calvin Klein insignia all over the walls and she gives me the dummy look . "That means Crip Killers " I kind of turned white. She explained that they were mostly young bucks and not to be messed with , definitely tied to a few local homicides . That is when I got my carry permit

I just moved into "the hood" = 255 W 7th San Pedro.
Strategically located easy walking distance to all amenities. I was joking with friends "when we were kids our parents told us not to go to this part of town" 😋 but downtown Pedro is being 'gentrified' Im three blocks from the Harbor, I can hear the fog horn😊

8:30 pm in Oakland. I pull into a station to fill up. A non-white walks up and starts washing my windows. I'm on the hook for that, then he asks if I want anyone killed.

I work in the hood, almost exclusively. In fact, I was in Pittsburgh two weeks ago and spent a few hours driving around some hood areas to scout out for a future business trip (once it warms up). I use to mow lawns around Swissvale and Braddock in college, and hadn't been back there since, but remembered it being pretty blue collar, if not hood then. Oh man, Braddock is gonna be a gold mine for final expense insurance sales. I went to Wilkinsburg, Homewood, Point Breeze, the Hill District and a few others and am gonna make a mint when I head out there for work around April.
As I type this I sit in Muncie, IN and worked here all week, plus some in Marion, IN. I made more in four days than in two mos at any previous job. A woman I met today has a daughter who was just sentenced to 144 yrs. for capital murder in TX. She drove the getaway car. I dated a girl in college (I went to Pitt) whose dad owned a restaurant space on the North Side. It was closed up, but she had an apt above it and I spent a lot of time there. Such a ghetto in 1993, but was probably pretty trendy at some time, having a loft apt above a restaurant there.
