It is thought that the opposable thumb and the ability to make tools and weapons is what gave rise to the larger brains of humans. That and walking upright so our hands were free to use the weapons when hunting.

One of our customers at a former job had his thumb smashed and basically cut off in a car wreck. They took his big toe and transplanted it to his hand. He had a weird looking thumb, but it worked just fine.

They say we and our hands started from fish. The fin (I think) on the left is from a fish that evolved into the walk on land tetrapods.
