What do you do with good junk

End of year clean up, found my tackle box full of bike tools and parts. The tools are easy, keep those, but 30 year old Shimano 105 brake calipers? They are perfectly fine. I will never use them, can't imagine anyone would buy them. Toss? Just close the box back up and put away again? Finding a lot of stuff like this, some actually taking up space.

flatbutt 11-22-2023 10:06 AM

I've sold a few Beemer parts on the classified page here. So, maybe try a bike forum?

Ebay. Start the bidding at $1.

My neighborhood has a “buy nothing” page. Its the easiest way to get rid of good junk. Pick up right from your porch.

Scott Douglas 11-22-2023 10:34 AM

In answer to your question Shaun, I accumulate it.

Just ask my wife.

LEAKYSEALS951 11-22-2023 10:35 AM

I've got bunches of drawers full of old bike parts. Problem is- it's too good to toss, but not worth the hassle to list and ship for the time and $ involved. Some of the stuff even has a word "campy" on it.

Can't toss that!

Faceplant (If you use it) is a good place to start. Dump all the bike trinkets out on a table and take a pic. People will (or will not) contact you. If it still sits around 6 mo later, at least you know youve tried.

Here's a local dude listing his trinkets- Do they sell? I dunno, but I've looked at the add.
Some people really get into the period correct classic stuff. 1990's builds are a thing now. Some people really want the "OE" parts for their bike.

fanaudical 11-22-2023 10:50 AM

Donate old parts to a local bike co-op?

gacook 11-22-2023 10:54 AM

On anything I decide to get rid of...

Ask friends if they/family need, first.

Donate or throw away if ^^ comes up empty.

id10t 11-22-2023 11:00 AM

Find someone still into bicycles to be your partner for the PPOT2023 Gift Exchange...

Martha Stewart better living tips:

Don't forget dumping in back of a car.

Trunks and back seats provide plenty of quality room if shed space is tight. Once back filled up, fill passenger footwell up to level of seat, making a stable platform to pile larger items on top of passenger seat.

I have a 5000 sq ft barn....... cant get any more in it....
Auction time then move is my thought!

This is a great way to get rid of old bikes and bike parts. In Chicago, there is a place called Working Bikes. They do just that: they fix and repair and donate working bikes. They have a small retail selection for walk in traffic too.

this

stevej37 11-22-2023 11:18 AM

I know that many don't like using Craigslist...but I have excellent results with selling on the site.
Ebay reaches a larger group, but shipping can kill the deal.

I normally have a half dozen, or more, ads going all the time on CL

Plus...it's free

pwd72s 11-22-2023 11:54 AM

Thanks for the reminder. Just gave a pickup cargo bar to a neighbor. Sold the truck a long time ago.

porsche tech 11-22-2023 12:16 PM

Can’t stand selling stuff…especially on Craig’s list. We donate old useful stuff to our church’s thrift shop. The problem with old hardware and stuff is as soon as you throw it out…the next day you need one!

Rusty Heap 11-22-2023 12:21 PM

Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Ebay

I have over a dozen items for sale listed at any time.

LEARN TO DECLUTTER. My new rule is to "never take a half empty garbage can to the curb" Look around the house/shop/barn..........there is ALWAYS something to toss.

Hold an item and say "does this bring me joy?" if not toss or donate.

great idea! I'll go to my bike shop and ask them for contact info. Probably bring everything just in case I can leave it with them. What's nice is I have a ton of micro spare parts that someone may need a little doodad to get their main assembly ready to go.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-22-2023 12:26 PM

Milwaukee 14" fiber disk chop saw sold very fast at $50 on FBMP. Really want to get rid of all my impact bumper body parts but see those languishing.

I do that also...so much stuff a person never uses.
Satisfaction gained by knowing I got my moneys worth on the garbage bill. :)

My wife does this with my stuff :D

I think a lot of us are in the same boat; we don’t need it, don’t care about the money, would love to just toss it, but we know someone else could use it, so we end up spending more time than what something is worth to try and get it into that person’s hands.

I have an RC helicopter that due to my lack of skill tested how gravity worked, it is too busted to be feasible to fix, but a lot of the parts are good. I think I will offer it at $25 on Craigslist. Maybe do the “I’ll leave it and an envelope on the porch; if you want it, take it and leave the cash in the envelope” then I don’t have to deal with somebody.

herr_oberst 11-22-2023 01:22 PM

I'll put those 105's to use.

Dixie 11-22-2023 02:05 PM

How to disappoint a girl on a car forum....
  1. Start a thread titled, "What To Do With Good Junk."
  2. Make the thread about crap in your closet.
*sigh* :D

Thats funny.

porsche930dude 11-22-2023 02:41 PM

People throw away perfectly good stuff every day. I know because i pick their garbage :) If its worthless but still good just make a pile in a corner somewhere. When the pile is big enough put it to the curb and a free ad on marketplace itll be gone in an hour.

I'm cleaning out the house of all the stuff. My sister was a hoarder and mom was a packrat that grew up in the Depression era. Usable stuff goes to Goodwill, Books to Goodwill or Friends of the Library, more expensive stuff I give to one of my friends and she distributes to her friends. My sister was like a little kid and collected anything and everything. Tons of Beanie babies and stuffed toys go to my friend and she gives them to the kids at church.

The crap and rubbish go to the dump. I load up my X3 and off I go! Well, I chopped up a heavy duty 6 ft shelf with my sawzall and put it into my rubbish can. Didn't feel like carrying that heavy metal. lol

WPOZZZ 11-22-2023 02:52 PM

On second thought, I'll ship it to Baz. ;)

jyl 11-22-2023 04:19 PM

For bike stuff, find a bicycle co-op and donate it. Shimano 105 is perfectly functional and someone will use it.

porsche tech 11-22-2023 04:33 PM

The latest book my wife is reading:
All about how to NOT leave your kids a mountain of stuff to get rid of…

I'm an advocate for doing this every three years.

stomachmonkey 11-22-2023 06:16 PM

I generally, much to my wifes chagrin, keep them just for the occasional satisfaction of finding a repurposed use and being able to gloat about it.

Kind of like this bin of used P Car transmission parts I have that I don't even know why I have because they fit neither of my cars.

I like having them around because it provides the opportunity for snarky commentary when the door opens. :DSmileWavy;)
