No thanks. A hybrid I would attempt.

Proof that EV cars are not ready for prime time. Even the expensive EV cars like BMW, Porsche will maybe get 300 miles on a charge. If you drive from San Diego to Las Vegas you would have to charge in Barstow on the way then again on way home.

Hah!

It was -40 here for a few days… there were people on the news saying how they drove from Edmonton to Calgary without heat and didn’t think their Tesla would make it. Then on Saturday, for the first time ever the Alberta government sent out an emergency alert asking people to stop using unnecessary electricity to prevent 30 minute rolling brownouts. People complied and the power stayed on.

I don't remember ever driving a car any distance without heat. (Michigan winters)

I sure don't want to try it at my age. I like comfortable temps.

You never owned an air cooled VW? Many winters with marginal heat...

I did noticed a lack of the electric vehicles on the road during the cold snap.

^^^ Wow..that's not good at all with those temps.
I would think they could shut the fast chargers down...if needed.

Yes, I've owned three diff air-cooled Beetles. There wasn't much heat...but still some.

It's a simple problem of "horses for courses".
EVs are unfortunately being jammed down our throat by 2030-2035 legislation that has not really considered the charging network development, overall electricity supply, etc..It's not the car's fault, it's not a bad technology, when used right. If you drive these things thru a snow storm above its range, expecting to "recharge on the road or freeze to death", you're a moron. I'll go one step further, if you can't charge at home (or work) and rely exclusively on the public charging system and buy one of those, I seriously question your judgement. Maybe you have a lot of free time, dunno..

However, If you want to replace one family vehicle out of your fleet, that you'll charge at home, will save you $ in gas, be fast as hell, pre-heat itself in the AM so your hands and butt are warm when leaving home, want a car you can beat up on immediately and not care about having its oil warmed up or plugs changed or catalytic converter stolen, they're FINE. More than fine, fricking great in fact. And then you're silly NOT to try one....

I used to drive a 1965 VW Van from Boise to Sun Valley in the dead of winter to go skiing. I was often alone. Even with the heater valve unscrewed all the way (ha ha, I'm serious), I had to wear my ski clothes including gloves and beanie and hold the gearshift in 4th, because it had worn detents. I was 19. 19 going on 15, I sometimes think.

I sure would hate to have to turn off the heater in my Tesla to make the distance.

I bought my first 69 Beetle in 1973 and drove it year around. I remember the heater being marginal...but the worst part was the windshield defroster.....terrible!
But it was reliable and easy to service.

Don't worry, global warming is coming to save all the elec. vehicles.

Yet, we here in the land of fruits are canning all gas appliances so we can all get on the grid just to cook or take a hot shower.

I was a little younger, but still going on 15. Four of us drove my ‘62 VW bus from Ohio to upstate NY to ski. Drove for miles and miles on I-90 at 50 mph in 3rd gear to keep the revs up and the hot air blowing. Building character or being stupid?

^^^ I remember the Beetles being fantastic in snow. With the narrow tires and rear weight of the car....they would go through most any snow...unless they bottomed out.

"unnecessary use of electric"
-don't heat your home because we ban gas heat
-don't charge up your EV so you can get to work tomorrow
-if your EV is charged up, drive without heat in sub zero temps so you can arrive
-don't cook a real meal in the oven (but we'll let you reheat leftovers in the microwave)

LOL. I think people are waking up to the pipe dream of saving the climate is becoming the nightmare of outlandish restrictions and expense. Kerry still flies in his private jet. Gore still lives in his 10,000 square foot house. The peasants are the ones suffering.
Let them drive Teslas.

We had plenty of power… then the leftist government that got elected because of vote splitting between the 2 right wing parties about 7 years ago shut down all of our coal plants…

There is a Meijer Super Store near me that has a dozen Tesla fast charging stations in it's parking lot.
The most I've ever seen there, and I go past almost every day, is two Tesla's charging at one time.
Their reg gas station is always full of cars fueling up.

If certain politicians get their way, there won't be new ICE cars to buy and your short sighted vision of access to recharging will change.

Very doubtful in my lifetime.
