OBDII Scanner - Battery Registration
 

Our Mercedes suv needs a new battery, but apparently you have to sync the new battery with the vehicle to get the right amount of charging. Something called " battery registration" which is new to me. I see that you can get car brand specific scanners, but I was hoping to find one that would work with all brands that was not too expensive. Any suggestions?

I suspect your local auto parts store can do the process for you. I have a very simple OBD scanner than was able to reset the battery registration on my cayman.

i just went through this with my bmw 3 series. As you stated, the battery needs to be registered to sync with the alternator and computer. I took it to the dealer. It cost $450. The way i see it, by the time I bought the battery and OBSll scan tool it was a wash. I seriously doubt the local auto parts store will do this for free. Their tools only diagnose and provide codes...To hook up the OBDll costs about $150-175....Florida

Look into scanners from Foxwell set up for MB, Pelican sells some of them. The one I have is intended for BMW but can read generic codes for other cars. To reset other car brands a software upgrade is available at a cost.

Are we actually talking about OBDII scanners or are these scanners that look at other proprietary codes via the OBDII port, but are actually on the CANBUS?

For instance, durametric and iCarSoft have tools that will read and potentially set options in the computers of modern Porsches, but I don't think those options are considered OBDII, are they? They are proprietary and the only "OBDII"ness of them is that the path to them is via the OBDII port.

In that case, i think you'd need something (Foxwell, iCarsoft, durametric) and then the correct manufacturer specific code (BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, etc...). I think to get one that could talk to all brands (probably a per brand cost) would be cost prohibitive unless you have your own auto shop.

I don't think a generic OBDII scanner is going to do the trick, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I believe it is manufacturer specific. Never had a scanner for a Merc, but you can find them on Amazon. Some of the cheaper brand specific ones (@$100) on Amazon will do everything.

I have brand specific scanners for the BMW, Audi and Porsche that will register the battery. read/clear codes, live data... The Foxwell works, but is kind of slow (NT510). However, you are able to add other makes to it, for a cost. Probably the same with iCarsoft...

Very timely thread. My 2015 S550 needs a battery and I was totally unaware of the need to pair it. I was going to buy a battery and just put it in. I know when the directional signal on the front went out I had to get an entire headlight replacement and it had to be paired to the car, cost me $4000 for the stupid headlight. Please post what you come up with The scan tool posted above looks like it might work

My wife's Macan has the same thing, register the battery if changed.

I have an Autlel MaxiCheck MZ 808. It works for almost every car even made. Even cars not imported to the USA.

For the Macan, I had to tell it a part number, battery type, amp hours and a serial number. I used the correct battery type, (Glass mat not wet cell) and part number and I had too change a digit for the serial number.

I called our dealership and they wanted $700+ just for the battery! Installation was more. Enough to pay for the Autel. I went to a local Interstate battery place and bought a new glass mat battery for $250. It had 3 more amp hours, than the original one, but everything else was the same.

It was a fairly simple process. My 85 911 used the exact same huge battery.

My business partner has a Ford Escape that I reset some cods and he figured out a minor issue and had to replace a part. It reads everything. No restrictions.

I replaced the battery on my 911 the week before my wife's Macan. Much easier to do, no computers needed.

Many years ago she had a Mercedes 1999 E320. I changed the battery, and we had to take it to the dealership to have the windows, sunroof and seat reprogrammed. That was expensive.

Replacing a turn signal required a full headlight replacement and that required being paired with the car? That's farking insane! Thankfully, my '08 boxster doesn't seem to have any of that silliness except WRT getting a new key which is understandable and reasonable.

Advance Auto Parts did mine for a 2008 3 series convertible. E93. They would have replaced the battery but it was on their list of NFW are we allowed to install.

I bought the battery from them. I put it in in their parking lot and Frankie the manager came out and registered it with their battery/charging system machine.

Battery was expensive as most are these days but the old one was factory from 2008 - 15 years.

Thanks for all of the comments and sharing of experiences. Since Costco has an AGM battery for $170, I decided to buy a scanner that specifically says it can do the battery registration. It's $150 and you can download additional car brands for a fee. This should work, I hope. Thanks again.

This seals the deal with me. I will NEVER own a car that knows WTF battery is in it.
I should be keeping the 2000 Boxster instead of selling it. It isn't worth JS but it doesn't give me problems that can't be diagnosed/fixed with Durametric software in an ancient computer.

My '06 Chevy truck doesn't need to be jacked off to work on either. These are OBDII cars. OBDIII I would be leary of from the get go. None of that nonsense for me.

The most complicated car I own is a '96 Jag XJ6. I will go just so far down the road with that before I sell it for scrap. So far at 190,000 runs like a top and is not bad out of the hole for acceleration. It's getting a little weary cosmetically because it doesn't have a garage.

If the Boxster sells it goes inside. I might even wax it.

I just bought an Interstate AGM at Costco. Maybe $210 out the door here in North Canton. Customer says "I can get a blah blah right down the road for blah blah. You could have gone right over here. Next time do that." My sisters husbands sisters boyfriend.

I set him at ease and gave him the receipt with no markup and charged him $40. It took me three hours as one of the terminal connectors had disintegrated. Easily a $100 friends and family job.

David has a real nice boat and lives on Portage Lakes. I go out several times a year with them and I can't afford a nice boat. Why would I gouge a nice fellow like that?

I replaced the battery in my 2013 Camaro ZL1 last week. The only reset required was cycling both windows.
I love my car a little more every day.

there is an app called jscan for Crysler offerings that is outstanding. i have gotten specific codes from my 2015 jeep wrangler that a standard OBDII would not recognize. was able to disable the TPMS, reprogram for larger tires and a regear. i wonder if there is an app specific for other brands that are a good? the free app, phone, a $20 license fee and a bluetooth obdII deal is all ive needed.
