Antique car with 2 vins...
I recently bought a 55 year old car that has 2 vins on it. The car was a dragster at one point in its life so had many parts replaced over the years. There are 2 vin locations on these cars, the driver's door and a hidden vin under a fender.
I'm pretty sure the door was replaced at one point and registered with the VIN on the door because this is the only visible vin (without taking the fender off). I doubt anything nefarious is at play. Just to be sure though, how can I search the other VIN to see if the car is stolen? I'm going to replace that drivers door again and it would be best to register the car with the hidden VIN.

When I bought the old E, the VIN had been screwed up. I called the local RCMP detachment and an officer came out, verified the correct number, ran a query on it and when it came back clean, gave me a document stating the true VIN ,which I took to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Ya didn't have to say a thing, man. Just roll with it. When you get the next door/VIN, ask what to do. Don't make problems you don't have.

Can do a carfax but it will cost you. Possibly ask the sales rep at the dealer where you picked up your truck if he can run it.

hmmm...
In Canada, the RCMP has a serial number search tool: https://www.cpic-cipc.ca/index-eng.htm I did some googling and I guess this works in the USA: https://www.nicb.org/vincheck Anyway, it checks out on both.

I posted before about an original owner Mustang that I got running for my son in laws family in preparation to sell. Well, the original VIN on all of the paperwork was a C code car. 289, 2 barrel. The fender apron stampings, including the hidden one and the repro door tag had A code vins. There were also 2 titles it turns out. The original was the C code VIN and a later title after a restoration was A code. It was a mess. The engine/carb combo was C code. Nobody in the family knew the history well enough to know what happened. Were the fender aprons replaced during the resto and restamped? Was the car originally an A code when delivered to the dealer but the engine was swapped to another car? Long story short, a dealer bought the car and said he would "take care" of the VIN issues prior to him selling.

Is it legal to have a door tag made/duplicated that matches the tag under the fender ? That way if/when you replace the door everything still matches . I don't know if that's worth the trouble or not .
There must be a rule/law ( maybe not ) that lays out the process of replacing a door or parts that contain a VIN or serial number . Interesting dilemma . Good luck |
