Cars with built-in speed limits coming?

It sounds as if they are in the near future. Newer cars are already fitted with speed sign recognition. My Civic flashes the latest speed sign until I drop below it.

It would be easy/cheap to govern the cars speed to the signs.
I can see it being fitted to rental cars first. I don't think I would buy a new car that had it.

^^^ They could fix that by moving the speed signs back to the entrance ramp.

For this very reason, the car manufacturer's are pushing back. It adds cost to the car for a 'feature' no one wants.

The added cost would be very little. With the sign recognition, that's already in the car, and maybe an added gps unit, all it would take is wiring to the ecu or cruise control unit.

I don't want it....but I will guess that it is coming.
The linked article explains why.

While it may not be expensive to implement, it will greatly impact the companies' bottom line. As stated, I think MOST people don't want this in their cars, and simply won't purchase a car with this "feature." Car companies would lose billions.

^^^ I agree....but it sounds like it won't be an option according to the article. It will be mandatory.
(until you bring your car in for 'a fix')

I didn't want lane departure and other nannies in my car either but low and behold, they are there. Not much you can do about it if you need a new car. Not many cars out there without some kind of nanny in todays world. In 50 years it won't matter, no one will want to drive and silly accidents will be a thing of the past. The world is changing fast.

Or...Skynet will activate and it'll all be over before then.

Maybe...or America's car culture will be the new Cuba.

FWIW, I HATE all the nanny features in today's cars, and that will likely prevent me from buying anything "new" ever again. My wife's SUV has all the nanny crap and I absolutely loathe it. My '15 Audi has none of it and is a pleasure to drive.

from the article...

“There are lots of things we can tweak that make crashes less likely and lethal, but one of the most powerful things we can do is slow cars,” said Isabella Chu, associate director of the data core at the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a news release this month that the accident in Las Vegas in 2022, in which four children were among the nine people killed when a car traveling more than 100 mph hit a minivan, was one of many that had informed the NTSB’s new recommendation.

Not the speed that kills. The sudden stop.
100 mph vehicle hitting a 60 mph vehicle. Delta of 40.

Now a Vehicle at 70, posted speed. A vehicle ahead misreads the 70 as 20.
Delta of 50 mph. Doesn’t sound any safer

Most newer cars have a forward facing camera that warns when rapidly closing on another vehicle.

^^^ A slot on the dash that will spit out the ticket as it happens.

I was discussing this with a coworker today. Near a school by his house out in the country, they lowered the speed limit from 50 mph to 35 mph because a challenged kid wearing all black riding his bike school at 5am was hit and killed. My coworker got pulled over for new lower speed. After a short conversation with the cop, the cop let him go with not ticket. Doesn't sound like the cop was fan of the new speed either.

This next part I really should type in ALL CAPS but I'll refrain: They have started putting medians on Houston streets that don't have medians now and really don't have room for medians because they say it's safer for pedestrians! How about the car wrecks now from people making U-turns since there are no longer proper turn lanes at every business! Not to mention narrower lane and no escape route if someone enters your lane.

I have an ongoing public record request with Texas DOT to determine if they actually called out lane widths on their drawings. I doubt they did since many lanes are barely 9.5' wide now.

This is how you get a guy who could buy a new car every year to drive a 20 year old car.
