There are times when I think no one remembers stuff like this.

Exactly...I used the original newsreel for a reason...to show the slant being done at the time. Also, the lack of response here speaks for itself.

Memories are short which makes life easier for far too many. Memories mean you have to think and reflect, drawing experience from the past and applying it to the now and the future. U.S. isolationism not being such a great policy in a world full of bad actors is just one such memory, lesson learned, that is convenient to forget.

Don't you just marvel at the parallels? In the early '40s Japan was trying to subjugate China and the West was trying hard to ignore it. Since 2014, Russia has been trying to take over Ukraine and we all wrung our hands and hoped it wasn't going to inconvenience us.
There are some you don't trust behind your back and you certainly don't ignore them.
Some lessons are learned the hard way.

Best

I lived in Hawaii at Wiapahu and that overlooks Pearl Harbor. When they filmed the movie Tora Tora Tora they used real Zeros and flew over the island and set of explosions at Pearl Harbor. We sat on the front porch and watched it. Cool explosions and seeing the Zeros fly overhead. I knew 100% that is was just a movie, but I tried to imagine the terror of those zeros shooting anyone they saw, civilians and service men.

I can't really imagine the terror of that day.

My dad worked at PACAF, on base at Hickam, AFB. That building still has the bullet damage on the facade from the attack. They leave those bullet damage holes to remind anyone that sees them that we were attacked.

A place every American should visit once in their lives to pay their respects.

Today (Dec 7) we should remember.

To me, this is a place equal to or more emotionally powerful than Arlington National Cemetery or the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

USS Arizona Memorial

I've posted this before here. My father's account of the attack. He was 21 and stationed on the cruiser Helena.

Never Forget!

My father was 18yo in the 41st div at Ft. Lewis (Camp Murray) outside of Seattle, and they went out to the coast and took up defensive positions. That following Spring he went on the Queen Elizabeth out of San Francisco to Australia.

I've been reading through some of the Island Fighting books in my fathers library.. brave young men and women... so many lost.

Many of us do not forget. My son (right) is posted at Schofield Barracks and the history there is palpable.

To the earlier posters advocating US interventionism around the globe, I cringe b/c I used to feel that way too. But I’ve had it with the never ending war neocons types. I’ve come around to understand that there is no border in Ukraine, or Taiwan, or the Middle East that is worth my son’s young life, or that of his brothers. Full stop.
If the US is attacked, like Dec 7, 1941 and what this post is all about, that’s a whole different story.

It was an honor to visit Pearl Harbor when I was in Hawaii a little over 20 years ago.

I am honored to have worked at Pearl Harbor for my first job out of college. I had a clearance that let me explore much of that area for a few years. Memorable and unforgettable!...a very special place!
