New 8' long LED shop lights are Stupid Bright!

I've got about 2000 square feet of shop space, half is low bay 9 foot ceiling, and high bay with 16' ceilings.

~20 years ago I build it and used (best at the time) 96 watt high output 8 foot twin tube magnetic ballast fluorescent fixtures. 5000K spectrum of bright but yellowish.

I've started to install 10 of these, and have now ordered more.

THESE LEDS ROCK and throw STUPID bright crisp white illumination even in the 16' high bay.

They're also really affordable in the 10 pack. I HIGHLY recommend these.

The Harbor Freight 4' LED shop lights are pretty good.

I bought the 4 ft under hood LED from HF. Very good buy. Bright, rechargeable, magnetic ends.

For reference those are 12,000 lumens.
The regular shop and kitchen lights are usually about 4000-6000.

I don't really like the clips they come with to hang them. I added zip ties to secure them.

Timely thread, I just put some new LED 4 ft'ers in my garage.
I tried using the tubes that were supposed to work with the old ballast lights but they didn't work with my fixtures.
So, I ordered new fixtures with 7000 lumens each.
They aren't 'bare' LED's so look a tad more finished than the ones in the original post link.
Got mine from Lowes.

I think these will do for now.
Bare LED's are really harsh, it helps having a diffuser on them.

I’m a little sloshed for a calculation. So here’s the specs.
It’s realistic. Getting less as it has been in the 30’s F.

I’ve bought the 120v fixtures from Home Depot and used a random extension cord to get light into a 20ft shipping container. I couldn’t get the led tubes to work on an inverter genie so i switched to the fluorescent tubes. I have to do the warm light(more red) as the blue light gives me a headache (but this is common for everyone that works in an office)…

Hard to judge color from the pix.

I bought some strip led a few years ago. I was really impressed by the brightness but ended up returning them because the color rendering made me feel like I was in the dark. It was super uncomfortable to work under that light.

Turns out some led have striking gaps in their spectrum, for example some green look fine and others can appear almost black.

I didn’t have the vocab before but it’s related to this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index

Now led makers are tuning their light output to score good on the test, they just shifted the bands to score well against the test but the gaps are just as bad.

There’s a new score called tm30.

Anyway. I ended up buying some expensive bulbs from soraa. The light looks like an incandescent to my eyes.

Lot of these cheap led look almost as bad to me as sodium vapor.

6500K ought to be good for me so just ordered a set. Have been using halogen at 3000K so will be interesting to see the difference.

My 26X40 garage had six 150W incandescent bulbs to light the whole thing. A few years back I screwed these in place of them.....What a difference.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VRDS785/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

They now offer the same with more leds and formable panels for about the same price.

Don't confuse 'watts' (not the actual draw but equivalent incandescent replacement) with 'color spectrum' with 'lumens'.
The cool blue spectrum is usually brighter.

Also divide lumens/watts used. Some are not as efficient.

Boxes on the shelf can be hard to decipher.

I have those in my basement and they're very good. Just make sure you have enough headspace.
