Should I be so stupid, Land Rover content
This belongs to a co worker. I could get it for $2000 give or take, probably cheaper. Is there such thing as a cheap Land Rover? It's an '05 and needs a transmission. Rear suspension looks questionable. Mileage unknown (I can find out). It's in pretty good shape, no rust. I have a daughter starting college in two short years, she'll probably get my trusty Honda by then. I'll need a daily. Plenty of time to sort this thing out.

How good are you at fixing electrical/electronic items? Depending on how many miles the transmission could only need a valve body repair.

They are good exercise. By that I mean all the walking home in the middle of the night, lonely country road...
Doesn't Toyota make something suitable. |

I just wish the Toyota people and the Land Rover people would combine and squirt out a Toyota with a sense of style and reliability.
I'd pass on the Land Rover.

DO IT
The suspension looks like bad air struts and/or proportioning valve located in rear. Start it up and see if it goes to ride height. IF so, then it's likely what I said. Don't drive it around too much like that as it will burn out the compressor (ask my wife). Roverland Parts in Florida is great for used parts. Check out the front suspension arms. IF you hear a clunk up there those are DOA. Easy fix and only about $300 for the parts. FFS, don't get OEM air struts. Aftermarket ones are just fine and about $300 per corner. They crack over time so this is normal. Arnolt is a great brand. If you can change a shock, you can change these. I'd also pick up a Bearmach diagnoostic computer tool. LR is very specific and your standard OBD2 thing won't tell you what you need to know. About $500 but it reads everything.

Why? Do you really want a worn out, dented Land Rover that bad?

I didn't seek this one out, it came to me. Rolled in to work this morning and there it was.
I had a '16 4Runner Trail Premium up until a couple years ago, shoulda' never let that one go. I've always just sort of wondered how bad can these LR's be? Seems with this one I'd already be upside down after having the trans fixed.

Some inspiration. These things are very popular now for off road/overland builds due to the low entry cost.

Of course, maybe I just want someone else to feel my pain. Just kidding, I love these things and they are far from the money pit that people claim them to be.

No one is questioning the performance of the Land Rover. I had a 1994 Land Rover Defender 90 and loved it.
I might still have it but I never really trusted it...constant fiddling with basic automotive capability and competence gets really old and in those days I liked working on cars. The little stuff, in my experience with the brand, that goes sideways gets tiresome. However, if you go in eyes wide open and can do your own inevitable repair work, enjoy. They are, and I know SUV''s are not beauty queens, best in breed looks-wise.
