Valvoline Restore and Protect is fairly new and is supposed to clean out your engine across several oil changes (maybe five) and I've been using it lately but still on first change. I would say the jury is out but I'm going with it. That said, I want to watch E Sully's video as this is obviously another additive(s) beyond the standard pack. ![]() Here's another installment of "Old Man with a Boring Story" SOHIO use to (60's and 70's) advertise "Ice Guard" in the gas and the hook phrase was "You go or SOHIO pays your tow". I would love to know how many times they actually paid and what the steps to prove it were.

My experimentation of oil is simply choose the weight certifications and synthetic grade (if called for) and select the brand that the car consumes the least of and is available on the shelf.
Usually that's Castrol syntec. No real issues with M1 but seems to burn a touch more in my cars. rjp

I have always been diligent with my cars. Regular oil changes, and in winter trying to make sure to drive far enough to fully warm the engine to get moisture out of the exhaust and oil. Almost every day I see a few cars pushing water out of the exhaust from too many short trips.
The direct injection engines of today have brought quite a few new problems. The switch to smaller turbo engines and low tension rings really brings it out. It causes carbon buildup in the intake and valves, a higher degree of fuel contamination to the oil on cold starts and warm up, soot, and low speed pre-ignition, especially in turbo engines. Depending on manufacturers, some of the carbon issues have been addressed by changing ignition timing, timing of injector pulses to spray fuel on the intake valves, and using a combination of port and direct injectors. Using Top Tier gasoline is vital now, along with occasional fuel system cleaner to keep direct injectors clean. Only add fuel system cleaners prior to oil changes to prevent oil contamination. Lake Speed Jr videos after going to Total Seal has given insight as to the unique conditions the piston rings go through. Oil companies are working hard to develop additive packages to deal with the unique lubrication needs of today. My '05 Corolla uses no oil, '16 ES350 loses a small amount, and '20 Sportage needs a top up between changes. I have switched to Valvoline Restore & Protect in my cars. It seems to be in high demand these days as inventory for 5W-20 was low when I looked for it yesterday than other types. I guess I will see if oil usage changes over time.

922k miles on original engine...bypass oil filter. Not a normal type of driver but still impressive.

What an embarrassment of an oil thread. Needs way more conspiracy and personal testimonials.

Big business, the gummint, and motor vehicle manufactures are collaborating to make you use synthetic oil so you gasoline car will die sooner and you will have to by electric.

Yeah. And to add the sales people at the auto parts store get a sweet kickback when they sell the expensive stuff.
