Wow, I haven't visited BAT in a couple of years, when they stopped covering motorcycles and scooters. I didn't got there just for those, but when they stopped I really tapered off on visiting.

I have bid on quite a few cars on BaT, and only won one, which was last summer on a BMW M6 Dinan Tubo. It was unfortunately very much over-represented by the seller and as soon as I go it, I pulled the motor and had to address lots of issues..7 months later, it is still not complete. I do really enjoy BaT and the diversity. Lots of cool cars, I just wish some of the sellers were more transparent and honest. If the car needs $30k in maintenance just say it! @harvardma - Congrats on the 308!!

I've actually bought two cars through BAT, sorta. The 356 was an RNM. I tracked the owner down a few months later through the 356 registry. He and the high bidder had a deal made verbally and then the guy dropped out of sight. We made a deal that has turned out very fair. Car is in fantastic overall shape.

![]() The second one is a Bumblebee. I had been looking for a 914 Can Am edition on and off BAT. I was just hoping to be the high bidder so I could go look at the car, etc. I put one bid in and won it. I thought my bid was going to be below the reserve but the auction just died. Thankfully it has turned out to be a decent car. I've done a lot of work on it. Rebuilt the suspension, fuel/vacuum lines, new injectors, brakes, etc. It still needs a few things, but it made the trip to Rennsport and back last year with 3 of my buddies. This shot is in Monterey in front of Borgs Motel.

Now it's so big that while it's "fun" it's also very frustrating, as the size of the audience guarantees someone will overpay on 99.9% of the cars. As such I've used it to great effect to sell an old Alfa and score $10K over market. I don't believe you can buy anything on it as a "good deal" anymore (of course there may be an exception here and there but not overall). It's just statistics, there will likely be someone with more $ than sense that wants it more than you, market value be damned. Also frankly I thought the place was not offering enough support... They push hard on no reserve or to have it super low, their copy is not at good as what you can write so you must hurry on th efirst comment, they take forever to post an auction, better not be in a hurry, and once the auction ends, you are SOL buddy "who are you again?". Any issue with the buyer is not their problem - they could greatly benefit from being an escrow service as well IMO. All in all I stopped looking completely because again, there will never be a deal there anymore. |

There are so many cars for sale there that you can still find a good deal there as a buyer if you have the right tastes. Last week there was an ‘89 325i with an S52 swap that sold for $10k. That seemed like a really good deal to me. Hell, if you want cheap transportation a Nissan Micra sold for like $2k, and any Japanese car with five-digit mileage is a great deal at that price. There was an Alfa Berlina in California that sold a couple of months ago for what seemed to me like a great price for the buyer. The seller was disappointed and I don’t blame him. It was a rough-looking car that was mechanically sorted and had been driven the way it was supposed to be driven for a long time. Just the kind of car I’d want if I were shopping for one. I look at the 90-series Prado auctions because I’ve driven them a fair bit and really like them; those aren’t ganga deals but they’re not overpriced either - if you want one, it would be a good place to shop and get a fair price. There are others I’ve seen recently but I can’t recall them off the top of my head. $100k for a W123 wagon is bonkers, of course.
