Apple Vision Pro

I think this is incredible but are we ready?

- Lots of our young people spend a lot of time looking down at the phones so maybe this will be better ITLR.

The 10 minute sales pitch make it seem like the next best thing. I wonder if driver sims could be a thing on the mac platform with these as a submersive panoramic screen.

Actually it’s kind of disappointing, Microsoft HoloLens has had this tech for quite a while and I’m sure is farther ahead with integrations. I guess I will wait and see when they put out the glasses, but I heard the price is going to be thousands…

Yea, over $3,000.
I will wait and see.

Yes no doubt thousands. IMO this device is an excellent example of true innovation but are we ready for it?

Note that what we're seeing here isn't actually her eyes. That is a video screen with her eyes being displayed on it.

This could be your lounge room and it's a stand alone device.

Google Glass did not take off way back when.
I think people might not like being recorded all the time in public.

There are several VR goggles for gaming already. How is this different?

I'd still want a wheel and pedals and fun cars and racetracks. I'm not sure that Mac supports those yet.

I'm with you... Life (and audio) should be analog.

But this device looks really cool in the professionally produced promotional video. What will they be like IRL?

In a couple years they will look like regular glasses, cheaper and people will be driving with them. You think drivers are distracted now?

In the TV news reports on it, Apple provided some video clips of the pretty lady having a video meeting with other people. Of course all the other people had faces as they did not have the silly looking goggles on. What are they seeing, her with giant googles covering her face?

Until the porn industry discovers them, they likely will be a very small market, great for gamers.

They may will be nice for long airplane flights, or times when you re stuck waiting somewhere.

Maybe I’m just out of touch, but I don’t get the appeal of this at all, esp at the price. Who the heck wants to walk around w/ ski goggles on? People need less tech in their lives, not more, IMO. We are slowly becoming a society that is losing the ability to effectively communicate with one another in person.

Here's a nicely articulate real-world synopsis and review of the thing:

It is certainly only useful in cool indoor areas. Useless when it is hot with sweat dripping off of your face. I bet the folks in a hot office will love them.

Never bet against Apple however. Remember everyone laughed at the idea of a phone with no physical keyboard.

It's not.

I have two HoloLens Dev kits. Ported one of our apps to it. As an entertainment device they are fine but for productivity not so much.

Apples product is an AR centric device, Hololens not really.

Apple have built a host of solutions over the last few years specifically targeting consumer creation and publishing of AR content. Taken individually they appeared to be just oddball novelty products but when you step back and look at them as a collective it's very clear what Apple did. The device is useless without content so they developed all the content creation tools first. And what they did is significant because they created FREE consumer friendly content creation tools.

I hear everyone freaking out over Apples price point but it's the same as Hololens 2 base package. Hololens 3 is going to retail for ~$700 more than the Apple device.

The goal is ultimately to create a product that is indistinguishable from the same pair of regular glasses we all wear today.

Now imagine walking down the street in a city you've never been to. You want Chinese Food, you ask SIRI where to find it. She presents you with options. You pick one and are able to view all the menu items in 3d. Looks good so you tell SIRI, take me there, as you stroll along you get not just audible directions but they also appear in your HUD.

You are walking through Target, you see something you want to purchase, a little AI finds the product and presents it to you in AR along with exploded views, animated assembly or service info. It will appear full size, provide measurements, you will even be able to interact with it, turn it on, watch it operate, etc...

3d models for e commerce are huge right now. It's proven to increase sell through.

We've all gone to a brick n mortar to look at a product in real life before going home and ordering it online. It helps bridge the gap between physical retail and virtual.

My company is currently contracted to produce thousands of 3d models per quarter for Amazon. We have other similar contracts but are prohibited from speaking publicly about those.

You would think that is an obvious use but the industry research indicates exactly the opposite.

Adoption for porn is not something current consumers are considering.

Why? It's actually pretty simple.

You can't see or hear someone coming into the room.

Yeah, I sorta get the long term view and I guess when it becomes a little more friendly to wear (glasses or even integrated in contacts), it may be useful to those who want it. I'm just not sure I want it. If everyone is walking around like this, human interaction with the physical world is pretty much forever altered in future generations - and I'm not convinced that is a good thing. Maybe I need to experience it. I can see in certain situations it being incredible, and maybe helpfulfor physically impaired people, but walking around having this on all the time I just can't fathom. Like a heads up display for your face....

Well thats exactly what it is, a HUD for your face on steroids.

As far as human interaction with the physical world, it won't diminish it but rather enhance it.

It's in the name, Augmented Reality, AR.

We've all been to modern museums where you have the opportunity to use a headset that provides far greater information on an artifact than can be gleaned from looking at it or reading from a placard.

With AR you can tour a city and get in depth interactive experiences far more informational and immersive than simply walking up to a building or historical site and looking at it.

Imagine visiting the Alamo and being able to stand anywhere in or around the structure and watching key moments of the battle take place in real time all around you.

That would be ****ing cool no?

Yea, the "human interaction" will all be fake. All the on-line people will be stunning good looking and just a fantasy.

It is coming, just like AI will change the world as much as the internet did.
