Best place to work as a Pensioner?
McDonalds, Home Depot or Walmart?

HD if you want to be relevant. There are some smart old guys working at our local HD. They are invaluable.

McDonald's and Walmart would be soul crushing. Home Depot could be kind of fun.

I've worked in a hardware store, post career... I, too, thought it would be a lot of fun. It can be soul-crushing.

Dog walker?

I hope to never return to a working career, but if I had to, I think I would search out some place that did something cool rather than some sort of chain store job.
I imagine that any job with decent co-workers could be made fun and meaningful with the right mindset.

In this neck of the woods- Microbreweries are king.
I'd be a bartender. The pensioner barkeeps are the best of them all. Strike up a conversation about anything. Their 1st house in Maine, Skiing in Tahoe, Jumping out of airplanes (with functioning parachutes, not like the Russian kid), Golfing with Alice Cooper. As much as I could rock the big box store HD/Lowes thing, I'd go crazy on the first day of... Do you remember this movie?
![]() https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mule_(2018_film) Some part time work after retirement would be cool but I'm more inclined to do charity work. Doing nothing is way over rated.

My dad drove cars that dealerships wanted moved to other dealerships for a while. He liked it. He pretty much had the pick of when and where he wanted to go. Another retired guy I knew liked to grow orchids. He started a business growing & selling them in his back yard. He knew a lot about them, & it wasn't a simple thing to grow them.

If I wanted to work, I wouldn't have retired.
Wait, now I work more than ever, around the house or at the cabin.

Probably a lot of cool jobs out there if money was secondary.

G'day!

Did I ever tell you about my friend, Gerry Peludat?
I met him back in the 80's when I had my first landscaping business. Gerry had an irrigation business and because (at that time) I didn't do irrigation, he and I would team up and bid on jobs together. We got to know each other pretty good during those years. In fact, that cold morning we lost the Challenger...it was Gerry whom informed me as he arrived at a job site I was already at - and no one else there. It was a residential house in Sugar Mill - a golf course community. We normally have some convo as we work, but things were a little quiet that morning. Gerry sold life insurance on the side (term) and also was a runner and ran the Boston Marathon every year. He also wrote a pamphlet on the subject of Tuberculosis. I have a copy. Interesting man who mentored me a bit in our chosen trade as well as some life lessons. He was a true Christian too. One of very few I have known in my life. Gerry retired from the business in 1995. One of his sons took over the business and still runs it today and has a very good reputation. Gerry never used a machine to do any trenching. He did it all by hand. Every job he did was laid out on graph paper beforehand. And revised afterwards to reflect a true as-built so the property owner had something to go by for any future needs. I remember once when Gerry came by a job site his son & I were working at and saw his son operating a trencher. Gerry didn't say a word.....just shook his head.... ![]() Each time I see his son I always ask about his Dad. He told me his Dad was living in Daytona now and drove people to the airport as a part time gig. I always thought that would be an interesting job. Driving folks to and from places. Build up a clientele.....something like that. Add customers through word of mouth. Unlike Uber, etc.

I posted the thread as a lark, playing off some other threads, however, after I was retired, I worked 3 different part time jobs (consecutively, not concurrent) to stay busy and make a few bucks to pay for insurance before I was able to go on Medicare. Someone above said it perfectly; it's about the people you work with that will make it worthwhile. I really thought the hardware store would have been right up my alley, but the husband and wife owners were total dicks to the floor help. Oppressive.
Right now I like not having an obligation to anyone, I have enough money and I haven't tapped SS.

I know a guy in CA that did the engineering life... Made enough to pay for the house/cars/ect., and currently drives school buses to sustain the daily expenses.
