And now for something completely different… Agricultural Drag Racing.
In what some sports journalists call a combination of gymnastics, drag racing, human ingenuity, and bovine stubbornness a new Olympic event was created this afternoon.
This Hereford cow slipped on ice and was unable to get up. She was not wearing her ‘granny button’ so when my wife found her, she had been struggling for quite a while. Her attempts to get up lead to her doing the splits - not something even attempted by goats at goat yoga… I first gave her a jolt with cattle prod to get her limbered up and determine that she could still move and had some energy left. She moved forward a bit but alas didn’t have enough traction to get (and keep) her hind legs underneath her. We tried a couple more times to get her nearer the water where the ice was a bit slushy in hopes she would have traction… it worked! She got up and walked maybe 15’ before reverting back to her gymnastic routine ending in a spectacular splits position… when again she slipped on the ice. At this point, my wife had an idea (this is the human ingenuity part) where we could put a strap behind the cow and drag her off this ice to a spot in the field where she could get some traction to keep her hind legs under her. We went really slowly and were careful not to break her hind legs. She appeared to enjoy being drug across the ice. Once we got her to the snow covered dirt, a shot with the prod and up she got. My wife walked her back to our paddock (1/4 mile) and she ate. ![]() Cows… they ain’t no picnic.

If folks didn't insist on eating the darned things, they wouldn't be worth the trouble.
![]() Glad she didn't do herself any serious harm. Best Les
